    exam hell

    hey
i'm a first year medical student in the middle of exam hell. there's no way i can revise everything in time, and i'm feel like crying the whole time. i feel like maybe i'm not cut out for it if it's so hard, it's my own fault, i should have started revising earlier. i'm thinking if i find first year so hard, how can i cope with next year, 6 years, the rest of my life like this.
please tell me it's worth it....

i feel your pain! no seriously, i can totally appreciate how you are feeling. it's like why haven't i done something more sooner? and how the hell do i get everything else learnt in time? but we learn from our mistakes and we do manage to cope with everything. you will know more than you think you know, at least that is what i am banking on.
and as for you being cut out for this, of course you are! you just have to remember that wherever you are, someone has picked you out of hundreds of other applicants to be part of their medical school because they see something in you which will make you a good doctor.
just try and stay as positive as you can, do the best that you can, and believe in yourself. things do work out in the end, even if you do have to do resits to get there.
    good luck and stay calm.
    5th year hyms!

Last year I was stressed with exams and this year i am again. Its the way it goes. There is never enough time to learn everything - you just have to plough through and keep your chin up! - i know it seems extremely hard, but it will soon be over and that feeling on the last day of exams is fantastic - regardless of how you feel the exams went.

I used to be someone that panicked quite quickly over little things, but soon learnt not to look at the exams as a huge great package and mash of subjects, but to work towards one at a time and to seperate them out into their manageable chunks.

You do learn stratagies to cope - and you will get good at cramming information to pass exams and then moving quickly onto the next. Don't be too hard on yourself - you are still really early on in the course, give it time!

Also - it may seem like a waste of time, especially with lots to do, but sometimes you need to pull yourself away from revision and take a few hours off - quality cramming only works with quality free time!

The 1st year transition to medschool is what most people find the toughest, so don't feel like you're alone, we've all been through it, and all your friends are undoubtedly going through the same thing. Next year you will have more idea what to expect and when you need to start preparing, so although the exams don't get easier as such, preparation will be better organised and the whole experience a little less stressful. The transition from preclinicals to clinicals is also a tough one, because what you actually study for the end of year exams changes dramatically.

Good luck and let us know how you get on

    Hello folks

I'm not yet at medical school, but I've been through law school and I know something about Exam Hell.

Blue - don't worry about not being cut-out for it. The first year of any undergraduate degree is about making mistakes. At the end of my first year I left myself less than two days to revise Property Law, which is a massive module, and guess what? I died on my arse. I never did it again...

No-one's going to judge you too heavily for doing badly this year, but you will be rightly judged if you make the same mistakes next year.

stick with it. remember it doesnt get easier but you get more used to it. i tend to eat anywhere been 1 and 3 kg of galaxy during revision week. best coping strategy in the world. that and shouting aaarrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhh a lot. you'll be fine.
