• Pre-conception Genetic Screening Arrives

A controversial test which looks for genetic mutations in prospective parents is to be offered in the UK “within weeks.” The Counsyl test developed by an American company but to be offered the Bridge fertility clinic in Central London and then by mail order can detect 109 mutations that could lead to severe congenital disease were the parents to conceive.

Costing £700 per couple the test has been questioned by some; Frances Flinter a consultant clinical geneticist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital suggests the test has a “eugenic flavour” and others argue that the diseases are too rare to need screening. There is particular concern regarding the mail-order test kits which are offered without any genetic counselling.
