Public/private/state school students at Cardiff
Hey,
I was just wondering, does anyone know the proportions of med students from public/ private/ state schools at Cardiff?
There has been so much in the media about biased entry. Depending on which source you read, some say public schools are favoured, others say state.
I chose Cardiff for reasons which were completely unrelated to how public/private/state it is. However, I've noticed that when i say im hopefully going to cardiff, people are like oh yah thats so public school. And im like really? I mean, the typical 'public school' unis are like leeds, bristol, oxbridge, brookes... is cardiff one of these stereotyped ones also?
I don't mind particularly, im just curious. I had, afterall, kind of hoped that in going to uni id get away from the public school life of a bubble where everyone is the same and everyone expects the same from each other, and to experience a new, and less superficial life with people from all walks of life!
Would be interesting to hear what others have heard about this topic, not just cardiff, but on the bias in general against/for applicants from particular educational/ social backgrounds?

Have decided to put my grades into my signature as I finally can do so without looking retarded...but I feel I should add it took many resits to get there!

Well everyone that I am close friends with come from state schools. On the other hand, I know plenty of people from private schools here as well. There seems to be no bias whatsoever. The only difference I think is that there are more people that speak Welsh as a first language here than in most universities. This may be seen as bias, but it's not because most people who speak Welsh want to go to Cardiff.
Caerdydd 2007 here I come!

as for your comment 'gizmo' do shut up. we established im not a 'poshie', nor do i want to mix with 'poshies' any longer.unless of course they just happen to be called 'poshies' when actually they are very nice.xGCSE: Let us not dwell on those 10 awful letters.

sori i dont get you. you're asking about poshies. my reply answers that, and could be for anyone to read, not specifically 'a poshie'.
my reply could easily be informative for me, cos i like mixing wif poshies, and i'm telling you there are both nice and nasty ones, you assume i'm saying they're all nasty. seems to me you are taking it so seriously that you assumed i'm saying you're a poshie? everyone else jokes about it, but i'm serious? no.
'ope you're there now, then we can avoid the 'oh do shut up' in future.Last edited by Gizmo says -; 16-06-2008 at 03:02 PM.

Guess with medicine there's probably always going to be a mix.
I'm from state school, and I'd never even considered there could be a bias...? But who knows!
Rosebot, keep wanting to join the Facebook group but don't want to tempt fate for my grades lol!Let's get revising...! Fingers crossed for Cardiff '08

I'd say it's really mixed here. Probably not as public schooly as oxbridge and bristol, but I think more people who do medicine come from public schools on the whole..
