Get paid for summarising medical notes at GP Surgeries
Hi, I hope this doesn't go against the rules of the forum, but thought I'd let medical students interested know about a possible opportunity to earn some money in spare moments during the course.
My name's David Sali and I was a medical student at Cardiff but due to the medical school wanting me to pay international fees despite me being a home student, I was discontinued after 3 years of medical school in September 2003. Whilst trying to figure out what to do next, I managed to learn about the opportunity to earn money summarising medical notes and got a part-time job doing so at a local GP surgery.
Now, the opportunity I'm speaking about could possibly be available at most any GP surgery near you, despite them not advertising the position so if you're interested you could do what I did and just drop in and ask them about the availability of this position. Pay rates are anything from £6/hour upwards and flexible hours.
However, there's a more specific opportunity possibly opening up soon at the GP surgery where I work. I've still to work out the details with the Practice Manager but it involves getting as many medical students as possible to help summarise the notes. The main motivation being because I can't continue the work on my own, am planning to move onto other things, and am trying to find a way to help the surgery meet its targets whilst helping out any medical students/nurses/anyone with medical background who need the opportunity to earn some money(like I did), and possibly get some contacts working with GPs.
So, having rambled on enough about this, I'll leave it here and post more details on this thread once I know that I'm allowed to. Also, if you could somehow let me know if you'd be interested in this opportunity or know someone who would be, then please let me know as well either in the thread or by PM.
cheers,
david

I am (un)fortunate enough to have parents who are GP's and have been summarising every morning for the past few weeks!
Definitely a way to keep medical terminology ticking over during the summer. Also especially as I have only done a year of the course I am continually learning something new that may be of relavence to the medical course in the future or that enhances understanding about something t already learnt in med school, but in an unapplied way.3rd Year Cardiff MBBCh - Intermediates soon!
Proudly not intercalating - I'll be a doctor a year before those who do!

tell me about it;seeing diagnoses, treatments, histories consistently repeated. It's been a real learning experience seeing the patterns and having what I've learned reinforced by the real examples I read in the notes. Don't blame you for not wanting to do it though
But if you know anyone who might no someone who knows someone....who might be interested then let 'em know and put them by way of this post.
cheers,
david
