this is mainly aimed at people already at the uni-help!! i have some friends already studying at cardiff, some doing medicine and some doing completely unrelated courses, all in years above me, living in a house nearish to the uni. they all moved in from year 1 and they've asked if i want to move in as well, which sounds really fun and would mean that im never on my own etc, and surrounded by people i already know, but does that mean im gonna miss out on a lot of socialising?! how easy do you think it is to make friends in your year if your not living in halls?? any opinions would be appreciated, thanks!

I've lived at home for both of my degrees and have not had any problem. You will be in Cardiff and won't be far from others if and when you make friends.... I wouldn't say it was a problem at all.

On the first day of uni and continuing through the weeks, there are so many opportunities to meet people and get to know people. In fact, I'm STILL meeting people and making friends after 2 years and actually demonstrating to my year. Its so easy to make friends in med school as you are all in the same boat and no one expects you to know everyone's name etc.

If you feel you want to live in a house with friends it doesn't have to mean you won't meet friends... and also you have the added advantage of living with current med students who can offer you advice.

    All the best

wow thats good, thanks was so worried because everyone tells me that halls are the place to meet people! i don't wana miss out on real uni life, but i think that generally the good things about living in a house outweigh the bad. but if you say that you can meet people wherever you live my decision is a lot easier! thanks x

mrs depp, I don't think you'd be at a disadvantage by living in a house during the first year, but, personally, I had an amazing time in halls. It was the most exciting thing that's happenened to me. Your just thrown together with crazy people from different places and different courses and they all have a story to tell, especially in the larger halls. I'd give anything to have that time all over again. I made so many friends and have so many good memories.

In a place like Talybont you're exposed to so many other medics as well.. you all walk home together from uni, hospital and nights out, and drag yourselves in in the morning. That's not to say that you won't make friends if you don't live in halls because of course you will. But part of going to Uni for me was meeting new people and making new friends, despite studying Medicine at Cardiff with my two best mates from school. That said, some people don't like the chaos of living in halls. It depends on your personality, I suppose.

Just give it some thought, because this is your only opportunity to have that experience.

I have to admit there are times I wished I had done the halls thing, however maybe its more that I've yet to move away from home. Regardless, I think you should do what you feel more comfortable with... it'll only be best for you in the long run!

I'm not into the whole drinking culture that quite a lot of students seem to devote themselves to, and I've heard some bad stories about halls. About them being noisy twenty-four hours a day and drunken people staggering around banging on doors at like 4 in the morning. I kinda want to avoid that but still have fun and meet new people. I also want to be in a hall that's mixed, between as many different courses and people from different backgrounds as possible. What are the halls like for noise and stuff? Is all of student life about getting drunk ALL the time?

Your bad stories sound like my kind of good stories! Halls are generally noisy a lot of the time. As a medic your usually the first back at the start of term and the last to leave so there are periods when there are mainly just medics and international students around. It is likely that your non-medic flatmates may well finish they're exams before you even start yours at the end of the first year so they might be partying constantly while you need to revise. Some flats will have homely, quieter people while others will be brash and misbehaved. There's no way to predict what you'll get. My first year was definitely devoted to getting drunk 24/7 and banging on peoples' doors at 4am. I think the smaller halls may be more suitable for quieter types.

Talybont Court is still being built. The main structure is up and the roof is on but it's still covered in scaffolding. Residences are the best people to ask for prices, I would expect them to be in the same sort of range as Victoria Hall.

    hello..

will talybont court be similar to talybont south or the other residences at the area for that matter? which residence is the largest in terms of size of room?
i wanna go for the talybont residences, but not sure which one to apply for...i'm an online freak and i'll have to pay extra for the internet line being at victoria hall.

i'm quite shocked to read that cardiff accommodation bans instant messaging etc....i'm an international student and communicating with friends and family back home is important!!!!
