    Question Medicine: Canada or UK?

Hi I have been admitted to St George Campus, U of T with a membership to the Trinity college for Life Sciences. I also got into Dundee for medicine.
At the moment, I am trying to decide where I want to study medicine.

Trinity is the best college of U of T and U of T is the best uni in Canada. However, I am not guaranteed to get into medicine after the LISC study. It is very very hard to get into medicine in Canada. It seems that Dundee will be the uni for me.

Other things I will have to consider is the tuition fees, because I am a Canadian citizen and it cost me alot (£12500 /1st yr) to study medicine in Dundee and it is nearly 50% less in Toronto. Another thing worries me is about the restriction against oversea medics in the UK... it is impossible to take any posts after the 1st PRHO year. I have been studying in the UK for 6 years now and I think I would be able to become a British citizen in the 4th of 5th year of my study.

Please help me out here, PM me or post a comment here. Thanks!

Jane, i think wt Wilson meant is that he have been living in the uk for the past 6 years, so together with the future 5 years of medical training, that would be more than 10 years of lawful stay in the uk so he can apply for permanent residency.

Wilson, i suppose you will be given permanent residency when you graduate in the uk so your decision betweem the 2 countries really depends on where you would like to practise (and money of course).
anyway, i hope you will make the right decision.

You have the chance to study medicine at Dundee and it's a good programme. You'd be nuts not to take that place. You can always work in N. America when you are finished. Remember, you'll be paying 8 years of tuition in Canada instead of 5 in the U.K. In addition, it's INCREDIBLY difficult for Canadians to get into Canadian medical schools, and the U of T has the fiercest grading curve in undergraduate. You absolutely need to be looking at getting close to straight A's in every class for the whole four years. I've met too many people who have gained admission to medical schools in another country only to forfeit that place in favour of a North American undergraduate degree....and extreme difficulty gaining medical school admission thereafter.

    Hey everyone,

i am just hoping if anyone could help me. I was just wondering what are the chances that i get a job as a doctor if i have qualified from the uk? would i have to take any further tests? and also if i had theoretically applied to a canadian med school, how much fees would i have had to pay (since i would be an overseas student from the uk?) thanks

Overseas fees are around 22-38K/year (Canadian) for medical schools, depending on the school. Canadian residencies go through a matching system called CARMS (http://www.carms.ca/jsp/main.jsp) and they have their own licensing exams which you must take before application.

i would definitely come to england for medicine, it's so impossibly difficult to get in in canada. I'm fortunate (at 18, dual nationality) i have a med school offer, and I don't have to get a degree first. Dundee is a brillliant city. You have an offer, you'll be a doctor.... I'd take dundee

Extremely difficult to work as a doc in Canada if you did not get your medical degree from there. You would also have to take their licensing exams before being considered. Only 3-4 Canadian medical school look at internationals (McGill, Toronto, Memorial) and you'll find the higher fee schedule on their respective websites.

It's extremely difficult getting admission into med schools here, even if you do your undergraduate degree in Canada, it's not confirmed that you would get into med school, different schools look at different things.

Hi, I've the opportunity to study medicine in Canada and I am a UK citizen, but what I am wondering if I were to study in Canada and get my degree, would I have to take to another exam or test to practise back in the UK?
