There's no real problem with an open application as the acceptance rate on average is pretty much the same. However, there is a certain importance to your college because you'll be spending most of your time there for your next 3 or 6 years so it pays to be discerning. You might have special preferences (e.g. family member went to a certain college) or you can simply set you heart on a college based on some research. Use an open application if you really can't make up your mind. Also, consider that going to college open days is a great experience in itself and can really help you choose a college.

Also, if you're a girl, and you submit an open application, it is very likely that you'll be allocated to a girl's only college, because they tend to have very low applicants (for obvious reasons!). This may not be an issue for you, but I wouldn't personally want to go to a girls-only college!
If you're a boy this is totally irrelevant lol... but I don't think it would have much affect on your application, but it may affect you if you dont like that college.

I did an open app last year, and ended up in Corpus Christi - will be going there this year. =)
The thing, though, is that I was really incredibly lucky with my open app, in that I got allocated to a college that I fell in love with once I read up a bit more on it. I wouldn't really advise doing an open app as I did, since I might not have been quite as happy if I was going to another college - but if you really don't have any preference for any college, an open app probably wouldn't hurt too much. =)
