I wish I knew some tricks. I'd like to get into med school as well.

If you look on the UBC's Medical website, you can find the pre-req's. Lots of services/volunteering helps, I hear. Especially if the volunteering has to do with helping people (not specific to medical help).

They do not take international students.

I am a canadian citizen, but live in the UK, I'm pretty sure I qualify to be able to apply, although I do not understand the candian university and college system.
I have tried their websites, but they are completely different to the UK ones, can someone explain to me how to apply to canadian universities for medicine, especially the British Columbia Medical School because I have good links with Vancouver.
    Cheers.

Your Canadian citizenship will go a long way to being eligible for Candian loans and also for admission to medical schools that do not take international students. You might want to check on the specific school of interest as some of them have residency requirements (you might need to live there for a year or so before applying etc.).

All Canadian schools that teach in English ask for a four-year undergraduate degree before applying. Although that is ordinarily expected to be earned in Canada, several medical schools (unlike the U.S.) will accept a foreign undergraduate degree with the apprpriate evaluation from a professional agency like the World Education Service (WES). When I applied to the University of Toronto with a British undergraduate degree, they asked me to send them a WES evaluated transcript before offering an interview (which I did not attend). This allows them to 'convert' your British grades and credits to an equivalent Canadian Grade Point Average (GPA), which is their working system.

With the exception of McMaster University, Laval (instruction in French), and (I think!) the University of Western Ontario, all Canadian medical schools also ask applicants to submit scores from the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT). The MCAT covers first-year uni/college chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, biology, and there is also an essay section and a section on verbal reasoning. The MCAT structure recently changed, and it is now much shorter. It can be taken by computer in almost any country.

    Good luck!

So I would take the MCAT in the last year of the undergraduate course I take? Well I am definately applying for medicine in the UK, but I thought that if I also applied in Canada it would give me more chances. However if I would need to first do another degree first in Canada, I therefore would not be guarenteed a spot in medicine when I leave school.

Canada is much later than UCAS right? so I could always apply if I don't get any offers in the UK.
    Thanks for the help

I would take the MCAT after - but not too long after - completing the afore-mentioned sciences at uni. Most people spend an entire Summer studying for the MCAT. There are review books that you can purchase online from various companies: Examkrackers, Kaplan, Princeton etc.

The closing date for Canadian schools varies by institution. I only applied to medical schools in Ontario, and there is a central application service (like UCAS) called OMSAS; they have a website. The deadline, from memory, is around November or December. It was three years ago....sorry, I've forgotten.

Yes, unless you apply to one of the French instruction medical schools (like Laval; 6-year M.D.) which accepts high-school leavers, the traditional route to study medicine in Canada is via a four-year post-undergraduate course, so that will be 7 or 8 years until you qualify after high school, depending on where you do your undergraduate degree and where you attend medical school - English unergraduate degrees are generally 3 years or 4 years in Scotland. Canadian medical schools are generally four years long with the exception of two three-year programmes (McMaster and another one on the West coast).
