The black covered book I have is called Color Atlas of Anatomy by Rohen, Yokochi, and something else. It's v. good. I wouldn't buy anything till you get here though, for other subjects.

I agree with cakelover. You really really don't need to buy books to research before. I know people who took gap years and they didn't research stuff before coming here and they've been fine.
Anatomy atlases are amazing but don't forget galenicals will offer you 10% off books that are reccommende but the only textbooks i would recommend buying from them is the anatomy atlas and perhaps costanzo. I have gray's anatomy for students as my text book and it's pretty good.
I also have biochem textbooks and short notes. These have been pretty useful. I bought far too many textbooks and I seriously would recommend thinking twice about every book you buy. They are very expensive and half of the books i have I haven't used. I would also consider buying 2nd hand. They're often the same editions, just might have been used by someone for a year!
Hope this helps.

Sorry to dig up an old thread but I would disagree on the colour atlas of anatomy book. I brought one at the beginning of the first year and never even opened it until the end of the second year. It is very useful for neuro anatomy though, which is when I finally opened it! Definitely second either Moore's or Gray's though (I prefer Gray's), it's by far the most useful book of the year along with Instant Notes for Biochemistry!
