Reading List - term start date

Hi all
I have been offered to buy som used books from a med student but I dont know which ones would be relevant for Brighton. Does anyone have a reading/book list needed for the first year, or following?
And which date is start of term again...trying to have a quick trip away before starting and want to make sure I am back before then.
Thx

Although the term starting date is on the Monday 1st of October, it is advisable to come a week before (Saturday 22nd September or Sunday 23rd September) in order to move into accommodation, meet other students, settle in and enjoy fresher's week! (btw, this information is available on the bsms website: http://www.bsms.ac.uk/studyingmedicine/faq1.htm).

Seeing as you have the chance to buy cheap books, I would suggest an anatomy book (Grays for students or Clinically oriented anatomy), a physiology book (Human Physiology by Pocock and Richards), a clinically related book to tie everything in together (Clinical Medicine by Kumar and Clark) and finally a book on clinical examination (Clinical Examination by Macleod). All other textbook/books are not up to the standard of these books and either give too little or too much information with regards to what we need. In addition, there are other books which you might find useful but only for a term and it makes more sense to borrow them from the library than to go out and buy them (especially as you will be a poor student!). Normally, however, I would suggest refraining from buying books until you've come to uni and experienced a term of medicine. That way you realise what book works well for you and the techniques you employ when revising. however, that said, the books I have listed above are generally essentials which will serve you throughout your studies as a medical student.

where are you thinking of going on holiday?Somewhere nice and sunny?

You don't really need books that much in your first year, as all the lectures are online. You might use them sometimes to get a better understanding of a topic. There is always a dear old library that you can use and there are plenty of them at BSMS. But if you are given a good deal, then ...may be

Before buying a book, it is advisable to look at the book first to see if it suits you, you may learn better from a book full of pictures or you may like a lot of text. The reading list should be mailed to you in the summer.

Guyton is infinitely superior to Pocock.

Pocock is a nice book to use enough pictures and text, not too expensive and usually recommended by physiology lecturers at BSMS. Guyton has a lot of informaton and text.

I found Pocock easier to use that Guyton...and also I completely forgot about guyton as wel! haha! Goes to prove Mila's point, it really depends on how you like learning. Cos if I had a Guyton book, I would not have been efficient in my learning compared to Pocock. (In addition, I prefferred Grays for students than clinically orientated anatomy....but I know a lot more people who prefere Clinically orientated anatomy and if I'd gone for the majority rather than taking the time to find out what worked best for me, I'd be lumped with a book that I do not learn effectively from)
