Last week I noticed a deep sense of calm in me. I was smiley happy all week from a combination of small things: the fact my shoes click when I walk in the office (when I was little I couldn’t wait to be grown up and wear shoes with heels that clicked like Mummy’s shoes, and now I do ), I bought a new cardigan from Topshop the weekend before and it has a waterfall front which swishes nicely when I walk and I had a quiet week where I got to solve a lot of people’s small IT issues as it’s like ...
An ABG is where a needle is stuck into the wrist at a steep angle to go and pierce the radial artery (the one you can feel with your fingers at your wrist). This is needed to see the levels of oxygen, CO2 and the pH of the blood. You need to get this information from an artery, as you want to know how much oxygen is getting to the tissues, not coming away from it. I have to be honest here, I don't think I have ever seen an ABG carried out in real life, but I have read about them (Wikipedia) and ...

Last week at work went really quickly. Partly because I was looking forward to my interview (perhaps looking forward to is the wrong word, more anticipating the interview) and my boyfriend coming down for the weekend and partly because of a photo frame on my desk.. For Valentine’s Day my boyfriend gave me a digital photo frame and filled it with photos of us, him and my Facebook photos. It was lovely of him, because I really like photos - my screensaver usually cycles through all my photos on ...
Hi, Ok, so my first week on my medicine rotation, which is based around the GI system (top to bottom, including associated organs such as liver, pancreas etc.) and I get back to the 'proper' hands on medicine. Nurses, endoscopies, cardiac perfusion scans, X-ray meetings, hepatitis, a patient who has severe intestinal bleeding, seemingly from switching to a purely raw food diet (not healthy), 'on take' and ERCPs topped off with an upsetting surprise finding that a patient only had ...
So last week was a nice and quiet one at work, which was good. Oh, and I won our weekly Thursday lunchtime game of cards, which was awesome It got crazily busy December/January time as I was trying to get around 80 data analysis reports done to an external deadline, whilst trying to find people to confirm I should do them and then check them once I’d done them. Since then, I don’t take the quiet weeks for granted anymore! I work for a pension’s administration company. It wouldn’t be my first ...
I did the International Baccalaureate instead of A levels, so when I was offered a place at University of Southampton for Med with 36 points and 666 at higher, my 32 with 644 at higher (4 ½ A’s at A level equivalent) didn’t get me very far. It did however, get me into a Biomedical Science Degree at Southampton Uni, which I absolutely loved (apart from neuroscience – very interesting but I appear to be rubbish at it, plants and molecular which are just dull and complicated and filled with three letter ...
Hi. Over the last couple of months I’ve been reading some blogs and it’s kinda given me the blogging bug. I’ve always been one of those people who start a diary as a New Year’s resolution and then get bored and stop by about February. Hopefully this one will last a little longer! The reason I’ve been looking for blogs is to get an insider’s view on medical school. See, I’m one of those crazy people who has decided to put themselves through the hell that is UCAS apply to med schools: ...
Hi, It was a very short week last week because being the last week of the rotation there were exams instead of ward rounds. That said, there was a single day in the psych hospital, which I really enjoyed. It is a shame that at the end of the entire psych rotation it starts getting good. A good combination between a proactive and interested consultant and seeing about 4 (yes four!) patients in a day showed me what psychiatry can be like. Two of the patients we saw were ...
I started writing this blog about a month ago and apparently NMM has deleted all my posts which is a bit of a shame, something to do with the updates me thinks. Anyways I havn't posted anything new simply because nothing much has happened in recent weeks in my final year biomedical science degree. I guess in a brief description about my blog; i'm a final year biomedical science student applying to medicine and in this blog hopefully ill be able to describe what happens and hopefully give some advice/tips ...
Hi, Ok, A better week than last, saw a student who seemed to be trying to persuade the doctor to prescribe him some Ritalin to help him study, a very activly suicidal patient, a 25 year old with aspergers and an actor with grandiose delusions who was bought in after going to a nursary and threatening to kill himself violently in front of the children. While from that list above it looks like I was kept busy last week I can assure you that this is not the case. Hours ...

Hi, A shorter blog this week, partly because of all the work that is going on a the moment limiting time, and partly because not as much seems to be going on in psych meaning I have less to write about. As a youngster I never dreamt of becoming a doctor. A doctor was all just a bit too establishment and for clever people, science nerds in particular. Certainly not for academically lazy and fluffy humanities-types like myself. And yet here I am, about to take on another four year installment of higher education, on the threshold of that most painful of initiation ceremonies, a medical degree. An intellectual inferiority complex and a streak of masochism nestle amongst the more conventional ...

Okay, so I have always wanted to be a doctor, but messed up first year of college and didn't get the A-levels to apply to medicine. Decided to do a degree in Biomedical Science with the aim of applying to graduate medicine afterwards. Hated most of my time at uni and couldn't get motivated, which resulted in me graduating this July with 2.2 - not many options for graduate medicine, but I thought I was going to fail completely so I was ecstatic that for the first time I actually had the entry requirements ...

Well, been up to Newcastle for the weekend to sort out my house and get things organised for September 1st! Was interesting! I had my first experience (despite living in the city for 2 years) of a Saturday night in Bigg Market…to make it worse we went to the Bam Raz (Blu Bambu!). It felt like Newcastle but not like I know it, and for once I felt like a visitor instead of a resident! I can’t believe how different it is when it isn’t a student night! Other than that, saw my mates ...
I was just wondering, does the UKCAT change from day to day or do all the applicants sit the same test?:

Yesterday I moved out of my beloved old house in West Jesmond and moved into the new one, also in West Jesmond, but across the Metro line because it’s cheaper. I’m afraid to say, it’s not half as good as my old house. So the new house has a bigger kitchen, minus any appliances such as even a kettle, so that’s something to buy. No pans or mugs or glasses or plates or anything. On the plus side, there is a dishwasher that I didn’t know about! The bathroom isn’t as good as the old one, ...

Well its probably half way through the holidays now (6 weeks before the new semester starts). Wish I had gone to some far off land like most of my friends but, quite frankly, I can’t really afford it, and thought I’d save my money to spend on the elective. I’ll already be in about £40, 000 debt as it is! Today I passed my PADI Open Water Diver course and my Dry Suit Diver Speciality course. Diving is a new found love of mine and it is absolutely amazing. I hope to go to Australia ...

20/04/08 - Suture Self?: The other week a friend and I ventured into the basement of the Royal London for a guest lecture. It would seem that the silent corridors and rooms of the hospital basement are for three things; the MRI, the morgue, and the medical students. HIV, as a retrovirus, causes the panic worldwide. Furthermore, its pandemic and cunning transmission among the population enhance the dominant prevalence in commercial heterosexual events, and homosexual events. I'll be honest. I've had a really shitty, unproductive week which has got me thinking that all of this tiredness is in fact psychological, and that I do have some 'residual traces' of depression. When I'm feeling like this I tend to do something fairly drastic and impulsive. Hence I'm sitting here with peroxide in my hair, in attempt to change my image. It's looking scarily orange at the moment (think Toyah Wilcox when she had her hit single in the 80s for those of you old enough ...

Should I have given myself a week to do it instead of a day? After all we've not even past the ucas deadline yet. Well, I guess I know Melbourne pretty well already. And, I can tell you love chocs too... I went to Cairns for 2 weeks too, with my new friends, initially my sister's of course. Come to think of it they were about equal in manners and I actually spoke (swore) more words to the mosquito right before I killed it. Anyway, for those of you who are in the least bit interested, this is my first ever blog and I'll be using it to comment on my attempt over the coming 12 or so months to transform myself into someone who might stand a chance of becoming a medical student. So, a bit of background: I'm coming up for 28, I have a first class degree in Sociology and I'm currently studying ...
