(a rather delayed contribution to this thread)
One thing I can say is that (despite reports otherwise, although, maybe I imagined them) I think student suppport is very good at bham medschool.
When I had an injury that cause me to miss like 2 lectures or something because of a hospital appointment, someone in the support office actually bothered to make a meeting to ask me if I had any issues or needed particular catch up help.
And I have a friend - who after a SGT tutor (Andy Shanks actually, awesome guy) noticed was a bit shy, has actually had loadsa meetings with Kate Thomas and is going to have special "training" to help ease her into the clinical years.Last edited by BeanOfJelly; 26-03-2011 at 09:38 PM.

Hi everyone
I wasnt sure where to put this question to get a good answer but i think this is the place
Ive just finished my 2nd year at bham med school and I was wondering how much each module counts towards the overall year average. I know how much each exam counts towards the module mark but not how much each module counts towards the year mark.
Are all the modules even in their impact on the overall year grade or do some count for less (IP/CBM)
Thanks

According to the MBChB Year 1 Assessment summary booklet (which should have been distributed at the beginning of year 1) and the Year 2 equivalent (ditto); each Biological sciences module is worth 10 credits.
LEM is worth 10 as well, as does PPP, CBM, IP1, IP2 and DPS. BLS and SSA carry no credits
As for year two, a similar booklet (Year 2 Assessment summary) suggests that year 2 biological sciences are also worth 10 credit each. with HES, DEM, CBM, IP3, IP4, and SP1 worth 10 credits each.
Clinical modules have to be multiplied by 25%. eg: CBM credits have to be multipled by 25% because it is a clinical module. As such, CBM is actually worth more than any single biological sciences module !
Similarly, modules taken in years 3-5 are worth an additional 25%.
To put this into prespective, the IMS module in year 3 (Integrated Medicine and Surgery) is worth 80 credit, but because it is a Year 3 module, add 25% (20 credit), and because it is a clinical module (based at hospitals) add another 25%, so it coems to 120credits. Meaning that the IMS module is worth the entirety of your 12 biological sciences modules done in years 1 and 2.
You can access these booklets through IntraMed, by going to "MBChB Course Information", and choose "Yr1 General Information" under Academic year 2010/11 (not the most up to date one, because that hasnt been published it yet), then select "Assessment and Exams", and select "Yr 1 Assessment summary 2010/2011". Hope that helps

That's great thanks! So I'm guessing you would convert your module % into a mark out of the 10 credits for that module and divide the sum of all your credit scores by the max available credit score for a yearly mark?
And man do those years seem insignificant now!

Yes, but you don't have to convert anything, its all done for you by medschool when you apply for foundation programme.
Ye - they do, all the stress of Year 2 was all not necesasry, lol, bang out Year 3 and u ll be sorted, as it can entirely turn your performance in years 1 & 2 around.

CAn we do anatomy as a SSC?
-
30-10-2011, 07:28 PM #28
Yes
Some of the SSC's are student-led, where you can choose any topic you want and study it on your own, so you could do a certain topic of anatomy (There's a week in Year 1 and a week in Year 2 of student-led).
The other SSC's are "staff-led", and there's a wide range of anatomy topics, to name a few: Radiological Anatomy, Anatomy and Art, Comparative Anatomy, and the very competitive one: 3D-Anatomy (where you do some dissection yourself, but it is very competitive as there are only 14 slots for this SSC in Year 2)Join the Birmingham MedSoc Freshers 2011 facebook group - Created by MedSoc: http://www.facebook.com/groups/252844784729492/
