Do you have any qualifications pre-A-level? Birmingham's funny about GCSEs as are some others so you need good GCSEs or equivalent to apply successfully. I you haven't done GCSE equivalent because there is no equivalent in your country, you should phone the admissions of the unis you've applied to, to explain, otherwise they may dismiss your application.

Hmm, so they've started giving out rejections... sorry to hear that Mario, I know how much it sucks I wonder if I have my own rejection whizzing towards me or if they'll keep me hanging on for a bit longer...!

My friend got 9 A*s 1 B at GCSE and got STRAIGHT rejection from Birmingham! She found out about 3 days ago. She e-mailed them asking why, since they said that people with over 7 A*s should get interview, and they just said that the standard was really high this year. x

Now, did they actually state people with 7A*s should get interview, or "should be in with a reasonable chance for interview (+ other factors permitting)"?
If it's the former, then this sure sounds a bit fishy. She can't just be "straightly" rejected.

So i hope you realise that it's the latter, you need to take other things into account...Which subject was the B in? What did she get at A-level?
Did she just get a rejections traight away without any other notifications? What were her reference like? PS? Did she show a commitment to medicine? What did she learn from her work experience (i.e. did she just list what she attended or actually explaine dwhat have taught her?).

    I hope this helps.

i know people with Bs who got bham interviews though, so they must have realised that theyw ere giving out alot of offers early on, and thought, ahhhh we need to cut down somehow.. so then cut off everyone who got a B. maybe. x
They require As in Maths and English Langauge.
Looks like your friend didn't do their research...

I think that is pretty weird that they rejected her.
I got only 5 A* in IGCSE and i just got an interview on 23rd of Jan.
But I already have my A level, 3 As from Maths, Biology and Chemistry and a B in Physics though.
I did quite a lot of work experiences and voluntary work and I was a prefect. I'm an international student, does it matter?

birmingham are weird about gcse's i agree.i went to their open day last year-travelled 4 hours to get there on basis i liked it and the course and i met the gcse requirements in the current prospectus. got there and the first thing the lecturer said was 'b'ham is the hardest medical school to get into after oxbridge. if you don't have at least 7a*s and 3a's at gcse you might as well leave now'.

not only were myself,my mum,my friend and her mum, annoyed to discover we had been mislead in the prospectus and so unnecessarily paid an extortionate train fare, taken time off school, and fallen in love with a uni only to discover we couldnt go,we were completely put off by the attitude of that lecturer, and left thinking that we were better off without b'ham anyway!

GCSE: Let us not dwell on those 10 awful letters.

    A2: Chemistry 'A', Biology 'A', English Literature 'A'
plus Spanish and Critical Thinking at AS.

Have decided to put my grades into my signature as I finally can do so without looking retarded...but I feel I should add it took many resits to get there!
