THAT IS IT!!! THANK YOU dsn. This is exactly what i have been trying to get people to understand. People get in with very bad grades. It's all about...chance.

It's not all about chance. There is some degree of chance.

dsn said he considsered his statement to be strong. Medical Schools may have disagreed. If you have 7A* at GCSE you're highly likely to be interviewed by B'ham. Then the decision to give an offer is based on your interview performance; so having 9A* gives you a very good shot at getting in!

If you have strong grades, strong UKCAT, a personal PS and a decent reference, you've got a great chance. Infact if you don't get in with those traits, there is something very wrong.

Obviously Swifty, it helps if you know what kind of course and location you have applied to...

It is not all about chance. And people don't get in with very bad grades (very bad being...? minimum requirements?) unless they have special circumstances. If you tick all the boxes, then you are in. If not, then you are either out or borderline.

Now, how do they separate two borderline candidates? Chance MAY be involved in that. Or not, that's why we have interviews. These are very important to the Medical School and show what kind of person we are and if we are fit for Medicine.

To Swifty: With 10A* and 4A at Alevels, a good personal statement, some work experience, you are DEFINATLEY in the top % of applicants, whether you like to admit it or not, and stand a damn better chance than most people applying.
I disagree. Swifty randomly chose his institutions without looking at prospecti/websites (or so he likes to claim). Also, he constantly goes on about how he has no chance of getting in. An interview ain't exactly going to go well is it?

bad grades include something like 1 or 2 A*s at GCSE and ABCC or something at AS level. Also, im unsure about something...AFTER the interview, what do the universities use to decide whether to give you an offer or not? JUST the interview performance and NOTHING ELSE? or do they still consider PS, references, grades, work experience blah blah ALONG with the interview as well to reach the final decision? are the reference, PS, grades blah blah only looked at BEFORE interview, i.e. is their purpose just to select candidates for interview and not to be used after interview?

i'll definitely perform my best at an interview...and i really didnt do any research on the universities beforehand, but im not very regretful now...and it's probably people like YOU who actually end up getting in, you know, really cheesy and annoying people who dont know anything about anything but claim to know everything about everything. Zip it, Josh, we dont need to hear you boasting about your brilliance and superhuman qualities.

Yeah because I'm the person with/claiming to have 10A* at GCSE and AAAAA at AS.

Wouldn't class myself as cheesy...
Never claimed to know everything...

I'd assume they take everything they have upto that point into account. So pre-interview they take into account your UCAS application (grades, UKCAT, PS, etc) to decide if they want to interview you and then post interview assuming you haven't commited academic suicide by giving a bad impression they take all the information and their impressions of you to decide whether you should be offered a place.

I don't believe people just get lucky or that any part of the application process is random. Things happen for a reason.

Well not retarded but unduelly harsh on yourself and also in response to others. It's as though you find conflict in something even when there is not.

Well, what is it about those grades that you find so hard to believe? You see, this is the problem with underachieving dumbasses these days - just because they are crap at studies, they automatically assume that all others are. Well, let me tell you something, you little zit. There is absolutely nothing that's even remotely difficult with achieving those grades. Hopwever, some requirements are eseential (obviously, none of which you seem to possess):

1) A minimum of 2 functioning brain cells (not undergoing apoptosis)
2) A pair of eyes (Functioning or non-functioning)
3) A functioning hand
4) Ability to attend a school for at least 1 hour a month
5) Ability to revise for no less than an hour a week (optional; dependent on mood)

These, my friend, are the secrets to success, believe me...
