Why did you decide to study medicine?
- attracting the opposite/same sex?
- Power?
- Money?
- Satisfy an inner craving for recognition?
- Tv (please state which tv program...)
- It seemed like a good idea at the time
- Relative is a doctor
Ok, discuss in an honest manner.
(ps: don't even think about asking about GCSE grades on this thread or else I will come and hunt you down during the night and inject you with enough carotene to turn you more orange than David Dickinson.)Last edited by Captain_Carrot; 08-10-2007 at 04:10 AM.
Crap, it's 5th year. How did that happen?
SSA: Done.
CBM: Coming up. Time to dust off the tweed jacket.

I'll start off with mine:
Yes to points 2 and 5 (Hawkeye (MASH), Dr Carter (ER) and latterly House and Dr Cox...)
I'll also admit to a little bit of number 1.
Feel free to add ideas...Crap, it's 5th year. How did that happen?

I think there are a few more
8. To try to help people (a few people may genuinely feel this)
9. To study medical sciences and also their clinical application.
10. To share the values of the NHS/ medical profession (whatever they are)
Personally...
1. no
2. yes... I like to see myself as a benevolent boss to a department of paper clip monitors. But also if you're someone like a director of public health you have the power to help entire populations improve their health... so really I'm more attracted to the possibilities of using this power to improve society, rather than the power per se.
3. yes... in so far as it's enough to get a reasonable mortgage these days, but not because I want to have waggon loads of excess cash.
4. probably not.
5. no
6. Definitely... one week in and I'm already having doubts... mostly about my own competence.
7. Only my grand mother was a doctor and since she lives in a different country, not sure that really counts.
8. I'd like to think so.
9. Yes, before I realised just how much work it all is.
10. Yes... in so far as the NHS has values.
Oh and I'd like to put in that I think the A* limit should be increased further, so that thickos like me aren't admitted... you know where to find me.Last edited by dsn; 08-10-2007 at 04:34 AM.

Sad dsn. Dont turn into a library mouse. its not very attractive to the opposite/same sex. lol
I always wanted to be a Dr and that was reinforced by ER and the very attractive thought of being an expert in my field (being a know-it-all). So hot!Anything worth doing is worth doing well
I've got a job with excellent rotations!!!
and I'm feeling optimistic about August

I had a record low attendance at the Barnes today... only once. But then again I did skive off for three hours to go to Tescos.

Honestly,
1. Respect
2. I thought it was one of the only professions where i could earn money and avoid politics (oh how i was misled)
3. Interested in problem solving
4. Helping people
5. Power
And that is probably my main motivations."What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us"

It'd be interesting to hear whether ! thinks his reasons for entering medicine lived up to his expectations.
(mind you we had the BLS lecture today in which they had to have a paramedic to deal with all the (ok one) people fainting). I also waited for fifteen minutes today to speak with the Great Bob for fifteen seconds... only to later find that he'd emailed me everything he said, already."Don't get high on your own supply."
