Thumbs up to the Med School, but what about the City?
Heys people! I've decided that I will, most likley, apply ot Birmingham for 2008 entry, howeverrrr. . . a few of my mates have advised me against this - on the grounds that they think Birmingham City is an AWFUL place. That it has extremely high crime rates and is basically just horrible. And since with Medicine you end up training in the City you got your degree in - this place could end up being my potential home, so I REALLY want to make sure that it is an 'ok' place, lol.
What do any of you think about Birmingham City in general???
I'd be extremely grateful for any help on this!
Thanks alot

Birmingham is a great city. It's been rejuvenated in the last few years. Good night life, nice clean streets in the centre, plenty of shops. Birmingham is no worse than any other major city - good areas and bad areas.
You probably will train in the area - but the school covers Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Worcester (so not just the city itself). You will not get such a diverse set of patients anywhere else.
Have your friends ever spent any time in Birmingham? You might want to pay a visit on a weekend if its just the city putting you off...

Birmingham is a nice city and and is moving forwards in terms of developing the city centre now that the bullring has completed. The only city in the UK more diverse than Birmingham is London. Birmingham is such a large conerbation and there is something for everyone.

To be fair there are some parts of Birmingham that are, err, undesirable places to visit without army protection. Not really, but all cities, have dodgy estates. Actually Birmingham is probably on the whole significantly less deprived than Manchester and Liverpool (measures by index of multiple deprivation).
Also unless you're going to be a GP in Tunbridge Wells you're going to have challenging patients where ever you work in the future, so you might as well get used to it now and learn to deal with it professionally.
Birmingham is often seen as a shit hole by people that haven't been there ever - it's just a stereotype pedalled, no doubt, by borderline racists.
Bull Ring isn't that important... what's important is the future. A new central library? New Street remodelled? And the delights of South Birmingham are its parks - Highbury, Cannon Hill, King's Heath and so on.
Simply Birmingham is the best city in England... by far.

I saw it ages ago. Though it doesn't work on your website.
Some of the comments on You Tube are quite funny. They don't get a joke , some of them.
Were you one of the people that made it? Next time you should have a "a day in the life of the NHS executive." A good excuse to play some golf and bugger around all day."Don't get high on your own supply."
