At my interview they asked me how i would persuade a friend to become a doctor and just the general birmingham stuff like career paths and how long it take s to become a consultant. One of the other guys that was there was asked about being a prho and how it was changing to 2 years or something. There are already some questions from previous interviews on the birmingham forum, have a look around and i'm sure you'll find it.

    Good Luck

The 2 year PRHO thing starts in 2005, so the current 4th years get to trial it.

It will be 2 foundation years, called F1 and F2. F1 is very similar to current PRHO, and F2 is similar to first year SHO, except that you won't have chosen whether you're doing med or surgery at that point.

After that there will be "seamless training", which is basically the rest of the current SHO and SpR years put together into 4 years. After 4 years you get a CCT (not a CCST for those who've heard of it) which is a Certificate of Completion of Training. You are then a General Consultant. If you want to specialise (ie upper GI surgeon with a special interest in X, instead of general surgeon) you then do a further 2 years and get your specialist training - equivalent to the current CCST and are finally at what we call a consultant at the moment.

F1 & F2 are pretty much organised as I described. There's still a lot of debate about how to organise the seamless training bit.

Basically describe the old (current) system and let them know that you know about coming changes and you'll be fine.

    Good luck!
