Hey, is there any chance you couuld poss help me fiona?
I'm kinda trying to decide what accomodation to choose... but i'm a lil stuck... i think i'm gonna go for a self-catered accomodation.. would you recommend it? Also which halls are not too far from the uni and are fairly "live-able in"... i only saw tennis courts and they seemed pretty nice to me?
    Thanks

I was self-catered - personally wouldn't have been able to stand living in catered halls - I can't eat dinner between 5.30-7pm. I only think about eating around 8pm!

Anyway, the main catered halls are Hunter Court, The Beeches, Tennis Courts, Jarrett Hall, Pritchatts Rd and ?Douper Hall. I've probably missed some out.

The oldest are Tennis Courts & The Beeches, and they are perfectly adequate. Jarrett opened 2 years ago, and Douper I've never heard of, so I presume they are opening this coming year.

Jarrett is by far the closest, and are also slap bang in the middle of Selly Oak (main student area that everyone lives in after first year). They are all en suite and very nice too. Only problem is very very limited parking out on nearby roads. Jarrett is about 5 min walk to the med school.

Douper also seems to be in Selly Oak, so they'll probably have very limited parking too, but since it's brand new it ought to be nice. Douper seems to be about a 10min walk to the med school.

Moving out a little, you have the Tennis Courts on the edge of The Vale, which are flats of 5-7 people, with shared bathroom and kitchen. Perfectly nice, just not en suite! They were my second choice accommodation. The Beeches are very similar to Tennis Courts, but further out again. Tennis Courts are about 10 min walk to med school, Beeches prob about 20min walk (but there is a shuttle bus).

Hunter Court is further out again, 35-40min walk (10min drive) and are very nice, en suite. This is where I lived in my first year - back then they were the only en suite accommodation.

I don't really know the self-catered accommodation actually on The Vale.

In a nutshell, the catered accommodation is probably the most dilapidated at the moment, but compared to the accommodation I've been seeing at other universities, they're really good!

    Hope I helped

Hi. I'm a first year medic at Birmingham.

I'm currently living in Tennis Courts and I can thoroughly recommend them. It is about 15 mins to the med school and is the nearest accommodation to the university on the vale. Elgar Court is really nice because it is new but further away and more expensive because it is ensuite. Jarratt Douper are also new and very convenient but the letting period is for 50 weeks rather than 42 weeks so it more expensive again.

You might like to consider Pritchatts Park as they are close to the med school but I have met anyone living there so I don't know what they are like.

From next year Shackleton Hall will have been redeveloped so there will be bars and shops and places to eat actually on the vale.

    hope that helps.
