pbl and 'chuck out' rates in birmingham!

for october 2006 onwards, what proportion of the course is pbl, and is this used in a consolidation sense or to learn new things?

i have also heard that a lot of people get chucked out at the end of their first year, is this true?

Pbl will still be a very small proportion of the course, with most of the teaching still being lecture based. Think maybe 10-20% PBL maximum.

As for people being chucked out, I really don't know why people are so concerned about this. I'm now in 2nd year, and from the original 390 or so in my year, there are now around 330/340 left. I know this sounds like a lot, but remember that a lot of people drop out because they find medicine isn't what they expected and don't like it. Also a proportion of those that do fail exams and resits are allowed back into the first year if they have mitigating circumstances.

The medschool don't have targets for 'chucking people out'. The pass mark is 50%. If everyone passes, they move into the next year, if you fail you have resits. Its that simple, and its all under your own control.
