Help i have an interview on 27Th Oct
I have an interview on the 27th of October at Birmingham uni. To say i'm nervous is an under statement :? !
I was just wondering how is the best way of answerieng the question "why not nursing?" because i don't want it too come across like i juat want to be a doctor because of the status and money. Because i know some nurses can, diagnose and even prescribe certain drugs.
Also when they ask why medicine is it best to avoid because i want to help people and concentrate on the science aspect of it all, and the fact that its a career which is allows, you to learn new stuff and develop new techniques throughout your life.

Why don't you want to be a nurse? You must have an answer to this already, just think about why you want to be a doctor instead.
I could give you a text-book answer to this one, but really you have to think of your own reasons. I suggest you look through the other threads here as the question has been raised several times.
For the love of God PLEASE don't focus entirely on the scientific reasons to go into medicine!! This won't go down well at all, I suggest you combine the lot (which is probably the most trutheful answer). They look for people who enjoy the scientific aspects, but who also want to look after people and will be keen on life long learning. If you state that you want to be a Doctor because of the scientific content they might think you are better suited to a biomed/ physiology degree etc (wherein you would actually cover the science in greater depth - by comparison Doctors need to know less depth, but across a broader range).
If you answer the questions truthfully you will fare much better, don't just say what you want them to say (and again look through the other threads here).
Good LuckSteven

lol I dont wanna be one cos I need the cash from medicine to finance me rally drivin' career....
.
Apart from the usual reasons - medicine as a degree, and diagnosis as a profession, is much more fascinating...

a lot of people say they apply to 'medicine only' 'cos they didnt want to be stuck in the nursing profession where they would always be wondering ...'what if I had done medicine? and some med school staff think this is ok....but personally I think it stinks cos these days you can go from nursing to medicine quite easily.... still Admissions tuters seem to lap up the wrong answers that used to work years ago but are now clearly out of date.
Just wanted to outline that even Admissions staff dont have the answers and can be wrong...whats important is your answer is waht you believe.... it will make it easier for you that way, you know .

Also make sure you're aware of how Birmingham organise their course - they don't want you to be an expert but it's a good idea if you're able to tell them why you chose their uni over another. (This ignores the fact that you should really have applied to courses with the full information to hand, which of course you did)
