    Selective Serotonin reuptake inhibitor

Sorry if I misjudged this forum(in what it is used for etc) but I'm looking for some help from someone who hopefully knows a bit more about this than me:

Basically which drug would be advisable to prescribe to a child(14) with a social anxiety disorder? I have read that they cause increased rates of suicidality in children excluding certain specific drugs but there are also other side affects to look out for. Personally I have narrowed it down to 2 drugs; not that I am unwilling to accept other suggestions but perhaps it will encourage you that I have at least looked into the matter beforehand.

    a) Buspirone - it seems to be very good in all aspects(doesn't react with any drugs/cause addiction) the only problem I can see is with a patient as young as 14 "the risks of "possible suicidal ideation and suicidal behaviour" by about 80%, and of agitation and hostility by about 130%" which looks pretty scary although you may want to note that the patient does not suffer from major depressive disorder(like the children in the survey) and also that this drug could be trialled to start with.

    b) Fluvoxamine - is much more child friendly but on the other hand it has loads of adverse side-affects, or so it seems. What's more it is prescription only which can be a problem.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated thanks.

The nature of social anxiety disorder somewhat inhibits the idea of a 'chat' although I appreciate what you are saying. I am undertaking Cognitive Behavioural Therapy regardless of the use of medication hopefully this will solve any issues and I will not have to get into any kind of drug use.

so you are looking for a anti depressant suitable for a 14 year old child? with no side effects or feelings that may lead to suicide?

other than therapy...there isnt much else for children other than what you have already suggested, medication seems to be the last avenue

Well, firstly this really isn't somewhere that you're going to get advice on which drugs are best since it's against the rules of the forum and most of us aren't qualified anyway...
Secondly, I personally wouldn't give drugs for social anxiety disorder anyway - but that kind of contradicts what I just said!
