4 year GEP, is my application risky?

    Hi,
I'm thinking of applying to barts this year for the 4 year GEP as my UKCAT was a bit below kings, so this year i got

    630, 690, 690, 760 - total 2770 average 692.5

I have a 1st class masters degree in Chemistry from Leicester and a Ph.D from cambridge in chemical biology.

Any advice if you think my UKCAT will miss the cut off? i'm a bit unsure at the moment..

    thanks for any advice!

Did you do a Bsc? what did you get in that? I think your score is fine tbh! I guess it just depends on how everyone else has done..
    Good luck!

nope my first degree was a M.Chem so its the B.Sc and Masters all in one go, and i got a first in that...

I just really don't want to apply if my application is going to be binned without being looked at on the basis of my UKCAT score

Oh cool! i graduated from leicester in 2008. I was thinking of applying for all 4 year courses as i don't really want to do the 5, and the extra money would be a problem. I think i'm going for Warwick, Southampton, Newcastle and Barts but i'm a little worried about the cut-off for newcastle and barts. Are you applying this year? what was your UKCAT?

I think you are safe for barts, but may even be OK for Kings, so I would give them a call to. The other year the lowest UKCAT I knew to get a Kings GEP interview was 697.5. However with your other academics you seem like a strong candidate (at least from the academic perspective) so there is some more leeway - we don't know the 697.5's academics, or if she was the lowest to get an interview. - Or what will be the cut off for this year, as with the new fees applications may be down.

Generally I found the Kings team to be very helpful and friendly, so don't be afraid. (Though they were a bit stressed when we were waiting for interview results and it was 4 weeks AFTER the promised to have got back to us)

thanks for the advice, definately appriciated! i think i'll avoid Kings this year as i think i'll just fall short and it seems a shame to apply to somewhere with a higher chance of a higher cut off...

I'm guessing im right in assuming that Kings cut off is usually higher than Barts and Newcastle? Newcastle is the other one i feel i'm on the border for, but will apply for.. i am right in thinking my UKCAT score isn''t too bad and won't weaken my application? it's difficult to get a perspective on these things due to most people posting on here have safe UKCAT scores of >700 and i know that obviously this isn't the case for a *lot* of applicants.

    Thanks again!

Kings have told me by email that there is a "better chance of being interviewed with a UKCAT > 650", so it might be worth a go if you are struggling to fill your choices
