Textbooks (GEP in particular, but good to hear from everyone!)

We've gotten the GEP booklist for Barts, and I was hoping people might be able to give a bit of advice on any of them. What ones we NEED to buy, which ones are useful, and which ones you shouldn't loose any sleep over!
    Here's the list:

Rhodes, RA and Bell DR. Medical Physiology: Principles for Clinical Medicine, 3rd edition, Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins, 2008.

    Kumar, P. & Clark, M.
Clinical Medicine, 7th edition. Elsevier Saunders, 2009.

    Baynes, J. & Dominiczak, M.H.
Medical Biochemistry, 2nd edition. Elsevier Mosby, 2005.

Rang, HP, Dale, MM, Ritter, JM, & Flower, R.
    Pharmacology, 6th edition. Churchill-Livingstone, 2007.

    Moore, K.L. & Dalley, A.F.
Clinically Orientated Anatomy, 6th edition. Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins, 2009.

    Rohen, JW, Yokochi, C, and Lutjen-Drecoll E.
Color Atlas of Anatomy: A Photographic Study of the Human Body (6th edition) Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins, 2006.

    Rubin, E. and Reisner, H.M.
Essentials of Rubin’s Pathology, 5th edition. Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins, 2008.

    Young, B. & Heath, J.W.
    Wheater's Functional Histology: a text and colour atlas, 5th edition. Churchill-Livingstone, 2006.

Alder, B, Porter, M, Abraham, CS, and van Teijlingen E. and Porter M.
Psychology and Sociology Applied to Medicine: An Illustrated Colour Text 3rd edition. Churchill Livingstone Elsevier 2009.

    Read A. & Donnai D.
New Clinical Genetics, Scion Publishing, 2007.

    Naish, J., Revest, P.A. and Sydercombe-Court, D.
    Medical Sciences, Elsevier 2009.

    Marieb, EN & Hoehn, K.
Human Anatomy and Physiology, 8th edition, Pearson Benjamin Cummings 2009. Included in the pack is the “Brief Atlas of the Human Body” and “Get Ready for A&P” which you will also find very useful.

    Thanks for any help!

Hey, First off, im not a GEP, im on the undergrad 5 year course, so what i say may not be relevant.

First off, Medical Sciences by Revest is a waste of money, I even found that most of my tutors told me not to bother bringing it to sessions as it wasnt clinical enough. It explains things from a very basic level, so i wouldnt recommend a GEP buying it as you probably already know alot, however, there are a LOT of copies in the library, so try that before you buy.

I personally like kumar, but you dont really need it for anything other than a few practicals and PBLS.

Wheaters histology is very very good, i would say to invest in that.

I cant remember if i saw the photographic atlas of anatomy on your list, but if its on there, definitely get it, its well worth the price.

Grey's anatomy is very good aswell.

I have the pharmacology book, and didnt find much use for it in first year,

Marieb's anatomy and Physiology sucks for anatomy. Physio its great though. The other book i have is Rubins pathology, a complete waste of money in year one.

I havent found a need to use any of the other books, but as i said before, they are all in the library anyway. And as youre a GEP, youll be covering year one and two in one year, and as im going into year two in september, you may find use for books that i have yet to open. Dont waste hundreds of pounds on books though until youve used them and liked them. Other than that, ill see you in september perhaps, or next september when your year and mine merge!

I wouldn't buy anything until you get here - there are lots of copies of the core texts in the library.

Everyone has their favourite textbooks and its best to see which ones you like best by using the library copies before spending lots of money on books you might never use.

From a GEP point of view: I would say you don't *need* to buy *any* of those books. There are plenty of copies in Barts library.

It is probably worth investing in a big textbook like Kumar and Clark - but a lot of people prefer Davidsons or Harrisons, so again, wait and see what you like best. And Oxford handbook of clinical medicine for your clinical years. And a clinical skills book.

And especially don't bother buying Marieb! Useless! I don't know how much more histology they are doing nowadays but I wouldn't bother with Wheaters. Don't think I've ever even opened a copy...

A bit off topic, but does anyone else think K+C 7th ed isn't as good as the 6th?

    Hi,
Seriously - dont buy any. I'm a GEP and just got whichever books out the library or sat in the library and finished off my PBL then didnt have to carry the books home.

I had 6 books at home with me during revision and didnt open one of them! Just got them out so i'd feel better 'if' i needed them

good luck for next year - you'll need it. GEP yr1 is hardcore!

You won't need to buy anything. If Whitechapel library is out of stock (which it often is), Barts library in Barbican will have whatever you need. The only thing we all struggled to get was Neuroscience by Shortland and Revest. I'm surprised that's not on the list, because I know the GEPs were all heading out to buy it this year. They sold out in a lot of places around London when we needed them (just before an ICA- perfect!) but it was just after the new edition was release. So they may or may not sell out this year at an inconvenient time.

Otherwise, buy nothing. They will tell you to buy Marieb, and convince you it's needed in order to keep up with the coursework. It is a useless waste of time. Absolutely useless.
    Psshyeah...

BARTS AND THE LONDON 09!...this scares me.
