students with learning difficulties- how well do you cope?

    Hi guys!

As a dyslexic student I was wondering if I could to get some views on how other students with learning difficulties have found the course- especially if you’re GEP. I know that Bart’s have a good support system in place and that I most probably will be able to cope, but some opinions and advice would help me decide whether or not to ‘firm’ my offer.

    Thank you in advance

    Taran

They are actually really good..... they let you have extra renewals at the library, take it into consideration for all your write ups and give extra time in the exams.... (i'm dyslexic too.... but not a GEP) the DSA gave me a dictaphone so i use that to keep up with notes etc. as i cant copy them down fast enough in lectures but it doesn't take long if you write some notes in lectures and use it to fill in the blanks in your notes.... they also have tutor type people who are available to help you structure essays etc... i haven't used them myself but it seems like a really good system.... plus they are really helpful in the office and I've never had any problems with anything...
Its a lot of stuff to learn..... especially the GEP course as they cram two years into one but its possible if you just put in a little more work.... I don't really think that I do much more than anyone else to compensate... maybe going over the lectures once more but mostly its fine..... and the lecturers are really good about letting you leave your dictaphone on the front or whatever... and really helpful if you need to ask questions....
    plus Barts is great....
    Hope that helps...

Hey, thanks for the advice in the reply! I was just a little concerned as to how students cope with the workload etc. Everyone has been really helpful, and hopefully I should be ok- its going to be hard though! (I was never one for the easy route hehe).

i'm not dyslexic but a few of my friends are. i'm in the 5-year so i wouldn't know how to comment on the situation in the GEP class...but I would say 2 things: 1) i've never met so many dyslexics in my life until i went to med school, and 2) it's kind of a running joke how much they spoil the dyslexics. seriously. i think you'll be okay!

lol, I am not dyslexic either but they seem to do everything possible, e.g half an hour extra in 1 hr exams, so its definitely an understanding school!

Thanks for the replies guys- I was just slightly anxious about how I’ll cope, especially as I’ve only done a ‘soft’ science. I guess I’ll find out when I get there!

    Cheers
