Accommodation
I have accepted an offer to study Medicine and the admissions office sent me an application form for accommodation.
Does anyone have any advice or information on the halls that isn't on the website? Such as are there halls in Mile End specifically for Medical students? And how far are the halls from the lecture theatre or where ever PBL takes place?
Thanks

From what I can remember from the open day, Dawson Hall is by Barts Hospital and Floyer Hall is on the Whitechapel campus with The London and the rest are in the Mile End student village thing. It's all on the website I think.
When did you get this? I only ask since I've asked about the application procedure for halls since I'm going out of the country for a bit and was told they werent sending the application stuff until July though?University of Liverpool - Graduate

Thanks.
I got it last night, although the username and password I got aren't working. I'm not sure if the application form is closed until a specific date or not.

There are NO halls at the Mile End campus specifically for Med students, nor is there a medic block anymore, so medics are expected to share with non-medics. Supposedly the minimum number of medics per flat has been increased for next year, although this was just a random comment at the open day and I wonder whether it has any merit. Dawson and Floyer ARE for Med students only, but are nothing like the mile end campus quality. You do however get a good sense of community in those two halls, especially Dawson for some reason because not too many fresher medics get put there.
Dawson is a long way from lectures in first year. Mile end halls (pooley, Feilden etc) are about 20 min walk (5 min bus journey on the 25). Floyer is probably 2 minute walk from lectures. Although, since some teaching occurs on the Mile End campus, you'll never have a perfect world.
If you are willing to walk from Mile End, it is certainly the nicest accommodation to live in and a lot of people take that option. If you really don't want to live in Mile End, then I would go for Floyer since it's close to lectures, but obviously it's very popular due to the distance from Perrin. Also, if you do pick Floyer, be aware it's an ooolllddd building, and although you get bigger rooms for your £££, there are no en-suites and the kitchens are kinda crappy.KCL - 1st Year Medical Student

Okay, thanks that's great
I only managed to get to London for my interview and wasn't able to make the open day so I had no idea about the accommodation. That's really helpful, thanks.

Dawson- nice area, totally dead at weekends (shops all close). 5 mins walk from barts hospital. the library at barts is much better than the one at whitechapel for having the books you need (because you're really only competing with other dawsonites for the textbooks). Basically only medics in dawson, with the occasional law student. Lovely green outside, great for having a can on a sunny day. It's on NHS property though, so you need to actually walk outside the gates to have a cigarette. Technically. Social life is great- dawson tends to have its own social scene. 30-40 minutes walk to lectures, 15 minute tube journey. 5 minutes from fabric.
Mile end- nice halls, new buildings, and right on the mile end campus which is pretty nice cuz you can just roll down to drapers bar and not have to worry about getting back. At the moment it's 2 medics per flat but they're increasing it to 4 medics next year for safety reasons. You'll make friends with non-medics as well, which helps during exam times when it gets really intense, but also makes it hard when they're going out and you're staying in studying.
Floyer- right next to lectures and the union. people who live here can basically live in the union. Rooms are old and kinda mildewy...not great. Does the job, though. Social life's not awesome but location makes up for it. Big sainsbury's about 5 mins walk away. Fried chicken everywhere.
If I were coming in as a proper undergrad I'd go for Mile End.Psshyeah...

Walk from mile end?? There's the 25 bus-8 mins! Even if you decided to walk, I've made it in 15mins when I've been late for lectures in perrin- and after lectures it can be quite a nice walk back up past supermarket etc and many pubs if you feel the need to stop...There is plenty of sense of community at mile end- its nice sometimes not just to be with or know people who on your course, plus you get the best of both student unions (at whitechapel and mile end). Its only 8 months really anyway- you'll most probably move out with friends after this. Mile end does have some not so nice accomodation as well as the en-suites etc though, so apply nice and early.

the walk is not that bad... takes like 20 minutes.... and the rooms are really nice at Mile End.... if you chose on sweet... the shared bathroom ones are much smaller and much older.... you will be with at least one medic but its also nice to have non medics to talk to... Floyer is close to lectures so its handy if you want to roll out of bed and into the lecture but its not as nice... and you don't really meet anyone thats not a medic.... Dawson is ages from lectures but closer to the centre of the city.... so depends what you want...
