Questions for current students at Barts...

For people who arent living in halls and commuting, its a bit unrealistic to have to come to every single freshers event. I was wondering which are the best ones for commuters to attend?

Also when do the actual lectures start, is it after the first 2 weeks?

    Thanx

The lectures start after the freshers induction, 3rd october? something like that, (I think)

I dont think it is unrealistic to commute to each event if u live pretty close (I live 1:30-2:00), cos u will commute anyway during the term time..

I'd like to ask the same question as #up!

I live 2 and a half hours away.

Are you starting this year or are you a current student?

And also, are the freshers events for dental students identical to those for medical students?

If you're not adverse to sleeping on sofas/floors, you WILL find someone who'll be happy to put you up for the night to enable you to stick around for events. I live in Limehouse, which is 15-20min away from the union and even I have had people living closer offer me their sofas/spare beds just in case I'm too smashed to get that far!

If you are the type to crave your own bed at the end of the night, I would say the night-time unmissables are Mummies & Daddies, Toga & Tequila and the Boat Ball.

You'll have introductory lectures on things such as the course structure, conduct & professionalism, welfare etc. during the Fresher's period but actual teaching doesn't start until the week after Fresher's fortnight. I think. Don't quote me on that; I don't know yr 1 timetable and my memory from last year is a vodka flavoured liquid haze...

Erm, generally if it says something happens at a certain time, it does. For the most part, things won't start until about 9am but you'll have to get used to the fact that some things require you to be places early, e.g. induction stuff, placements, off-site PBL, certain lectures where there are location clashes/lecturer availability, almost any clinical SSC -- you'll have to get used to it!

For the student packs, they'll start handing them out at 8am. They'll finish handing them out at 9.30am, and then you probably have a lecture in Perrin after that, right? You can show up any time between 8am-9.30am but you'll have to queue and it might run over with you hanging about waiting and missing the start of the lecture. The induction lectures refer to things in your student pack, so it's a good idea to pick it up... but if you don't, you can go grovelling to the student office later in the week (like I did )

    Hi Snugalicious
Can you give some info. on the timetable. Are there lectures/teaching sessions everyday 9-5? Are Wednesday afternoons kept free?

Also do you do a lot of group work. I know the PBLs involve this but is the rest of the course mainly lectures?

Here (click) is a screenshot of a typical week of the FunMed timetable.
    Wednesday afternoons are kept free.
SSC1 in first year is split into 2 poster presentations that are group work & all PBL is group work, obviously. Occassional things, such as IPE and MedSoc (GP placement) posters are also done in groups.

A lot of things are timetabled depending on your ABCD group - these aren't sessions where you work as a group - they're still more like lectures/practicals but mostly things that need to be taught in smaller groups such as microanatomy, anatomy, clinical skills etc.

    The rest is lecture based.

Is the talk on Saturday the 19th compulsory? It says that all those in halls will be picked up- does that mean that all commuters don't have to attend? I'm confusedd! =)
