    Graduate Applicants

Hi there, I am wanting to apply for 2010 entry to Barts and was just wondering how graduates faired at Barts for the 5 year course? How much do they rely on the ukcat because I've heard they rank you on your ukcat score but on the their website faqs it says:

'10. How will you use the UKCAT?

All Universities may use the UKCAT differently. At Barts and The London, we will use the UKCAT mean score, in conjunction with the UCAS personal statement, tutor reference and work experience to indicate which candidates to interview'
    .

    Could anyone enlighten me please!

I got on to the 5 year course, as a humanities graduate, with a 673. I know of some people with lower scores that were accepted to read medicine there.

I'm a science grad with a ukcat of 615 and I got a place. There seem to be an awful lot of grads doing the 5-year this year.

i was interviewd at Barts 3 times!

once at alevel, and twice as a grad with ukcats of 602.5 (2008 entry) and 662.5 (2009 entry).

I don't think they rank by ukcat ... i think as long as you meet their criteria and their cut off, you are on equal grounds to others in terms of ukcat score.. well i beleive this is the case for the interview selection stage.

I applied to the GEP and 5 year course at Barts with a UKCAT score of 620. Got rejected from the GEP but have a place on the 5 year. Also have a science degree.

Ah cool. I've decided to go for it and apply to Barts anyway. My ukcat is 627.5 (was 642.5 last year ) which equates to 2510. Last year their cut-off was 2450. I hope I get in, I think it'd be quite cool to study in London. Such a variety of students from around the world as well.

Was thinking of applying to Barts as a graduate, but hadn't considered the 5 year course. Do you have to apply separately to the 5 year and the GEP (as 2 spaces on your UCAS form)? Also do you need to have brilliant A-levels? - mine are a bit rubbish so don't know if my chances are better just going for the GEP, although got a feeling my UKCAT score isn't going to be that great either?

    Any thoughts?

I would recommend that you see how you do on the UKCAT and then take if from there.

Hey BellaGiz, I'm pretty sure you'd have to put it as two separate choices for Barts. As far as I know, whether or not they look at your A-levels depends on the your degree. If there was sufficient Biology and Chemistry in your first degree they won't look at your A-levels:

Graduates applying for Medicine (five-year course) or Dentistry
    UK graduates
    :
Degrees in any discipline are acceptable for the five-year MB BS or BDS course, but you must have at least an upper second class honours degree. In addition, you must be able to demonstrate that you have reached a satisfactory standard in Chemistry and Biology, and either: there must have been significant component of Chemistry and Biology in your degree programme, at least equivalent to AS-level (proof will be required from your university); or you must have achieved grades of at least AB in A-level Chemistry and Biology before starting your degree. Graduate applicants who do not fulfil these criteria will be expected to have at least grade B in both Chemistry and Biology at AS-level, in addition to their degree.

Applying for undergraduate study at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry

    Hope that helps!

    Hi BellaGiz

You do have to take up two spaces on your UCAS form to apply to two courses at the same insititution. For me, I really wanted to go to Barts as opposed to getting onto a graduate course. I did the same for Kings where I applied to both their graduate and 5 year course so that took up the 4 spaces on my UCAS application. Location was really important to me as I don't want to move or travel too far so it was either a choice of Barts or Kings. I wasn't that keen on going to Kings either as I had completed my first degree there and had mixed feelings about the uni. I visited Barts and knew it was the place for me. Also I think as I have been working and out of studying for a long time I think a 5 year course would be better for me in the long run.

Qualifications wise........I have a 2.1 in a biology/chemistry based degree and my a-levels were B and C grades. I'm assuming that it was my UKCAT score that prevented me from getting onto the graduate course but my degree and experience/personal statement overshadowed my UKCAT to get me a place on the 5 year.
