    surgery live - thoughts?

I've just got through watching heart surgery live on channel 4 on demand. I wondered if anyone else had seen it/the collection of programmes and what peoples thoughts were on it.

e.g. is 'demystification', as Krishnan Guru Murthy put it, what the public want? should surgery be kept as something special and keep those surgeons on a pedastal?

I personally found it really interesting and it prompted me to go away and look up more information on mitral valve replacement. I think it is a fab teaching aid for med students too.

    so thoughts?

I watched the brain surgery and really enjoyed it. I think demystification is very important, especially for those who might be having surgery in the future and are unsure what will happen & are worried about certain things. It may help those people to be more informed, show how far medical science has come. Surgeons shouldn't be on a pedestal at all, if someone is going to be operated in they should know everything about what is going to happen, why and how.

I'm going to watch the heart surgery tonight on 4oD

I don't know how much demystification actually went on - most of the time seemed to be a little bit like trying to teach muggles to use a wand.

As such, I think the programmes may even *reinforce* the pedastal status of surgeons. They all came across as regular people, not the superhuman robot wizards people might expect, but there they were, doing magic live on C4.
    UL class of 2012.

I think my brain is full.
