Its never too early! THe more long term you get the more committed you look. Get long term voluntary work around hospitals, organise shadowing with Drs, (gps and clinicians), and ask to do 1 or 2 week placements helping out nurses.
Keep your extracurrics going (sports, music, mentoring etc) and just stay comitted to the cause. A lot of people struggle with applications because they leave their work exp until the last minute in the summer and dont get much. If there any awards going at your uni try and win them as well! Awards and prizes for outstanding achievement at uni always look impressive.

yup exactly what hoonosewot88 is saying, try to do things to make you look as "well rounded" an individual as possible..med schools tend to love that phrase.

However, first and foremost, make sure you work hard to fulfil the academic criteria, concentrate on getting your 2:1 or 1st degree...mucho important!

p.s. hoonosewot88 i am loving your "yet another..." signature!

Oh yeh, getting your grades is a pretty fundamental part of it too, forgot that . Many med schools dont distinguish between a 1st and a 2:1, some (like Birmingham) do. Just make sure you stay above that 60% (i assume its 60% at all unis?) to get your 2:1 and you are sorted on the academic front.

If you were to get a 2:2 it can really hamper an application, but even then its not the end of the world, you can do an Msc or apply to Notts/St georges.

Get your work exp in hospitals where possible and try and get experience not just with doctors but with nurses, volunteers and maybe even lab staff as well. As you are tackling it so early you have a real chance to do this thoroughly and to display your commitment.

In your spare time as i said do sports and music if you can, and try and get positions of responsibility where possible (eg. i became treasurer of my unis snowsports society). Awards, certificates (first aid, DoE etc) all help the cause.
a couple of schools have a weird "unusual qualities" section in their assessment of admissions. Meaning that if you do something a bit different it can help you out. My friends suggested i join the fire-eating society but i settled for taking a British Sign Language level 1 course and writing articles occasionally for the uni paper and a football website Dan Mitchell's FFC | Football FanCast (shameless plug i know!).
Whilst these things are certainly not unique i would imagine that not many applicants will do them, and in med school admissions anything you can do to make your application memorable is hugely beneficial.

Do your best with admissions tests (dont believe what they say about not revising for UKCAT, it does help to do a bit practice for it), then make sure you read med schools admissions policies as they contain vital info on what they look for in PS's and interviews.

This is all stuff i should have mentioned in the first post but it was a bit of a half-baked post cos i was watching Trainspotting at the same time lol.

P.S Hehe, thanks Okora. I put the sig up there cos i was getting so fed up with posting and reposting saying where i was applying and what grades i have. And now, to be a massive hypocrite, i'm going to ask you where you're applying to? (sorry!)

While officially Birmingham does appear to be the only Uni who favours 1sts over 2:1s, I don't think it's unreasonable to believe that a 1st will give you a huge advantage at any Uni.

I for one don't believe any of this "a 1st and 2:1 are treated the same at this Uni" nonsense (sorry hoonosewot88).

I went to the QM, and the grade for a 1st was 70% average pass rate weighted 1:3:6 over the three years. So get an A in the first year, 3 in the second and 6 in the third and you've got a safe 1st.

I'm only going on what admissions departments have told me over the phone and what it says on their websites. The official line at the vast majority of unis is that they don't distinguish between the two (though i think they should, after all, a first is much harder to attain than a 2:1).
Whether med schools actually follow this policy is another matter...

Quite right, hoonosewot88. I wasn't having a pop at you. Everything on this forum is just personal advice, and in my experience Unis will go for a 1st every time, despite what their webbies or phoneys say.

Only approx 10% of a year will get a 1st, after all.

It's like criminal records: a school may well state that they don't unfairly discriminate, but look at Majid Ahmed and Imperial... (let's not re-open that can of worms)

A grad applying to all 5 years?! Don't see that very often. Gonna be costly to do a 5 years, especially seeing as three of your choices are London unis!
I'm sure you'l be fine, theres a thread somewhere atm which is making interesting reading. Turns out that in terms of applicants to places for 5 years there are on average 2.5 applicants per place. Obviously way more with GEPs though.
Which is your first choice? I was very tempted by Kings and really like the look of Barts. I also went for an open day at Notts/derby and thought it looked really good. Would defo have applied for notts GEP if i'd done the GAMSAT (decided not to in light of getting a good UKCAT score).
