Asking Current Barts Students for their opinions/advice on the following questions:
1) I know that Barts’ provides a PBL course for the 5 year medical degree and was just wondering what proportion of each week is spent on PBL? Does the quality of tutors vary a lot? Do lectures appear regularly each week about the topic studied during PBL?
2) Is there a clear divide between pre-clinical and clinical? What is the proportion of time spent each week on clinical work? Is there a lot of emphasis placed on clinical work?

1.) PBL is usually 2-3 hours a week, depending on how fast your group is. PBL doesn't have tutors per say, they have facilitators...just there to make sure that you don't go off topic. They say the best PBL groups have their facilitator say nothing the whole time! Yes, the lectures complement the PBLs always and vice versa.
2.) Although BL claims there is no clinical/preclinical divide, there is in the sense that you don't go on clinical 'firms' full time until your third year. However, compared to other traditional courses, we excel so so much. We don't learn science, we learn medicine from day 1. Everything we learn is applicable to clinical practice, even the lectures will have treatment and diagnosis of conditions, analysis of X-rays, CT, MRI, bloods etc. In the first year, you spend a full day every fortnight in a GP and usually half day every fortnight or so learning basic clinical skills.

Dissection/Prosection
Hello,
I would like to find out if the teaching of anatomy in QMUL involves dissection?
Thank you =)

I could well be mistaken, but i'm under the impression that dissection is a selected study module.

I'm pretty sure its an SSM but if you join the anatomical society you still might be able to get that dissection fix if you don't get it through the SSM system (limited number of places).

Does Barts and London give any preference to those living in the Tower Hamlets borough?

Ahh, thats why they let me in!

Joking aside, I don't think that is part of the selection criteria. If it were, it would say in the prospectus I reckon.
Your location can, however, entitle you to a little bit of money from TH local authority (they send you the info when you apply for your loan/grant). I wasn't elligible cos I'm too old...miserable buggers!Barts GEP 2008...what was I thinking?!?!?!

No, there isnt any special selection criteria for those living in london. Dissection is an SSM, although a surprising number of people wont want to do it, and as there are 2 SSMs per year, each with 60 places, if you put it down as one of your first choices for both SSMs then you will be very unlucky not to get it.
