Any Bart's current/former students?? A few questions..
Hi. I"m an international student from Malaysia (taking IB), and i have been called for QMUL interview on this 8th of Jan at my college. I've been doing some internet research about Bart, but i think asking directly to those who's studying there is still the best.Here are a couple of things that i need some insight on;
1. What are the best things about Bart (from students' perspective)
2. What are the not-so good things about Bart.
3. Where do students usually hang out at?
4. As far as i'm concern, the teaching method is PBL based, correct? But there's been a growing n disturbing rumors that PBL gives rise to clique. is it true? Does such things occur in QMUL?
5. Do the student-student, student-lecturer, student-community relationship going smoothly?
6.Current events that take place around there (that may not be available in the news). i kindda need this for my interview.
thanks in advance..

cool ones - bars, clubs, pubs, the Brats bars.3. Where do students usually hang out at?
uncool (about 50% at least) - the library, i wuld azard a guess. well trained, they are.
i dont follow. 'ow does PBL in any way result in cliqueness?4. As far as i'm concern, the teaching method is PBL based, correct? But there's been a growing n disturbing rumors that PBL gives rise to clique. is it true? Does such things occur in QMUL?
ow is this rumour growing if its based on nonsense? its like me yelling 'blubbalubbadubba' and a rumour being based on that.
some do some dont, like any other institution.5. Do the student-student, student-lecturer, student-community relationship going smoothly?
although i suspect the Registry are 'ated. This may well be a universal law (ie throughout the universe).
what kind of events macca?6.Current events that take place around there (that may not be available in the news). i kindda need this for my interview.
RAG is quite useful.
try checking out the friendly websites on barts, its nhs trust, its museums, events in local boroughs like Ilford, some of the tourist attractions in London even especially the new Docklands area. They are very elpful, you see.
And once you've done, if you're still interested that start on the important bits about attractions of the skool and course.

1. What are the best things about Bart (from students' perspective)
Medicine. The way the course is structured is pretty good. Good mix of pbl, lectures and patient centred teaching. Ive only been there for a term so I might be misguided.
The fact that we have two astro turf pitches nearby and a good choice of bars / pubs.
2. What are the not-so good things about Bart.
The area. Some people hate it. But most people like myself get used to it pretty quickly.
3. Where do students usually hang out at?
Depends on the person. Although you'll always find students in the students union building, the Hayfield (a pub adapted for students) or the library.
4. As far as i'm concern, the teaching method is PBL based, correct? But there's been a growing n disturbing rumors that PBL gives rise to clique. is it true? Does such things occur in QMUL?
Yes its PBL based. But i dont understand your question.
5. Do the student-student, student-lecturer, student-community relationship going smoothly?
The relationship between students is pretty good. The vast majority are very friendly...but again it depends on the person. Theres a lot of things going on at Barts, whether its drama, sports, etc so its quite easy to meet new people.
We have lectures as a whole year group (which consists of around 250 ppl) so its very hard to build up a good student-lecturer relationship. I guess thats the same at most unis though.
6.Current events that take place around there (that may not be available in the news). i kindda need this for my interview.
Dont really know what you mean? Du mean events in london or events at Barts? Barts students do plays, fashion shows and RAG (raising and giving) week which I suppose can be classed as 'events.'
If you want a better response try posting your questions on www.admissionsforum.net. Theres a few more barts students on there. Good luck.

Okay, from a former student...
1. What are the best things about Bart (from students' perspective)
Friendly, chilled-out, close enough to central London without being as expensive. Reputation as being on of the most fun medical schools in Britain. A 13-hour week for most of your university life.
2. What are the not-so good things about Bart.
Some people say the area. I like it. The new course is a bit pants; it neglects key anatomy and physiology in favour of a ridiculous amount of touchy-feely communication skills.
3. Where do students usually hang out at?
As has been said, if you're fun; THE UNION, the Hayfield, anywhere social. Otherwise, the library.
4. As far as i'm concern, the teaching method is PBL based, correct? But there's been a growing n disturbing rumors that PBL gives rise to clique. is it true? Does such things occur in QMUL?
I have no idea what you mean about cliques. PBL is good because it's holistic; you (supposedly) learn about all the aspects of a medical problem at once, rather than doing physiology one month, pathology the next, pharmacology after that. Bad because it's far too laid back and easy not to do any work.
5. Do the student-student, student-lecturer, student-community relationship going smoothly?
Yes? How hard can it be?
6.Current events that take place around there (that may not be available in the news). i kindda need this for my interview.
For your interview - read the news. For the university - get involved. Say you want to join the sports teams, go to the union, get involved with RAG and steal the leopard and they'll take you. Also helps to be good looking.
Enjoy.

More or less true, but just to add, as of this year, an extra 2 lectures have been added per week in the first and second year, and anatomy spotter exams have been introduced along with the incourse assesments in the second year so its heading in the right direction. In 2008 when the school looks at it syllabus again, quite a bit of physiology and anatomy will probably be put back in.Some people say the area. I like it. The new course is a bit pants; it neglects key anatomy and physiology in favour of a ridiculous amount of touchy-feely communication skills.
