Is the amount of anatomy teaching enough to prepare undergrads for a surgical career?
I was just wondering, because this will be an important factor for me when it comes to deciding between Barts and Liverpool. Any thoughts?? Thanx

I'd say you'd probably learn more anatomy at Barts than at Liverpool as Liverpool is purely PBL!

I thought with the new Human Anatomy Resources Centre at liverpool, they might be better.

Well, why are you asking us then?

The best answer I can give is that it makes no difference; as a pre-fresher you may be a little premature to decide that you want a career in surgery and perhaps more importantly BL will give you roughly the same chance of getting into almost any speciality as any other school.

Hi!
I'm a 3rd year Barts student. To honestly tell you the truth, I don't think our course prepares you with enough anatomy to be a surgeon but I don't think Liverpool does either. To honestly tell you the truth, you probably won't pick up the sufficient anatomical knowledge needed until your a registrar. In all medical schools, you're taught a lot of anatomy in the 1st 2 years and never taught it again. Only when you're a surgical registrar will you need to learn all the pointless anatomy you were taught in med school! I agree with cheeks, decide on the pint prices and of course we will hands down! lol!
But to carry on this post, if you are truly considering to become a surgeon I wouldn't just consider the amount of anatomy. Consider the reputations of the med schools (the old barts med school had the best rep for producing surgeons along with UMDS), also look at surgery in each med school, don't know much about Liverpool but Barts have already got a famous surgeon, Prof Williams as well as hiring another Prof of Surgery from Imperial last year, Prof Kakkar. We also have a neurosurgery prof (cant remember name) and rumours circulating that we're gonna appoint a prof of cardiac surgery. As well as this, the Royal London and Barts have lots of eminent surgeons and a couple of the services are national referral centres. Hope this is useful!
