    Question Philtral dimple

    Can anyone tell me what is the purpose of philtral dimple and columns?

    I thought they existed just simply through a consequence of folding etc in embryonic development. I am not sure they have a function, but patholofy wise of course cleft lip/palate come to mind.

    I was taught there wasn't a purpose. It allows for stretching for facial expression (grinning smiling, pouting).

    I think it doesn't have a purpose but probably like what Frank E said its to allow stretching!
