Intercalated Anatomy BSc
Hey Folks, Im looking into an intercalated degree in Anatomy- was wondering if anyone knows which medschool offer it, mine doesnt (Birmingham).
So far I know that Leeds, UCL and GKT do. A dissection-based project such as Leeds appeals to me but not sure if there is the potential for publication.
Any help would be appreciated on this matter,
Thanks

Cardiff University does it (based at the school of Biosciences).

The anatomy BSc at Leeds does indeed offer a clinical anatomy project that involves dissection of upto 5 cadavers. Whilst the majority of topics may not lead to publication, if you are keen, and especially if you have a clinical contact who can help you choose a specific area you may get some form of publication out of it.
I did a project evaluating the potential for a new approach to carotid endarterectomy. I presented it at a regional Vascular Surgery meeting, and it has been selected for publication in the Annals of Surgery. I am also about to submit a short report on a different aspect of my work to the European Journal of Vascular & Endovascular Surgery. So dont completely write off the anatomy BSc in Leeds because you cant get a publication - because you might well be able to! (but i appreciate the fact that it doesnt immediately lend itself to publication, so you have to think outside the box a bit).
You also produce an e-learning package (something i found v time consuming) however, my DVD has been very well received by the surgeons who have seen it and there are currently over 15 out there in use by surgeons.
It is also a good opportunity to build surgical contacts and learn an enormous ammount about a specific area of anatomy and surgery.Marc

External
Thanks for the swift reply, i found it very helpful.
Congrats on the endarterectomy project! Out of curiosity what approach did you suggest? I did my 2nd year SSM dissection on Carotid Endarterectomy.
I will be applying to Leeds as an external student and Leeds students are given priority, are there usually places available for externals in Anatomy?

Arg - Leeds definately accept external students. you need to contact the course director Dr Tunstall. Address is avaliable via the Leeds med school website under intercalating.
My project (in a nutshell) was comparing the traditional antejugular with the reletively new retrojugular approach (behind the IJV) looking at degree of arterial exposure and effects on local cranial nerves. It has been suggested that the retrojugular approach should be adopted routinely. But i raised some specific anatomical concerns with the approach that require much larger RCTs before the retrojugular approach can be used routinely.Marc
