UKCAT Abstract Reasoning hints and tips
What is Abstract reasoning asking you to do?
Find out the relationship of Set A & Set B, then answer whether the questions fit into Set A, Set B or Neither.
Abstract Reasoning Time Saving Hints and Tips:
In abstract reasoning questions, there are a limited number of questions they can ask you as the relationship must hold true for all 6 boxes in each set without being obvious.
Practice as many questions as possible, so you can recognise patterns instantly.
Look at the two sets and figure out the patterns BEFORE you look at the question shape, otherwise it confuses you.
Facts you should know:
If you see:
• Square, Parallelogram, Right angle triangle and Block arrow think the relationship is about right angles
• If you see an arrow in each box think the relationship is related to direction of arrow or colour of arrow or both
• If you see a clock face, the relationship is about angle of clock hands or relationship of hour to minutes (so write them out)
• If you see the same 4-6 shapes in each box, look for a rotation
• If you see Dominos, look for a relationship between the top number of dots to the bottom number of dots, they may be even, odd, a multiple or +/- 2 or 3 dots.
• If you see shapes, look for the box with the fewest shapes as the relationship will hold for all the boxes.
• Sometimes you need to step away from the screen to look for alignment patterns e.g. does one set of shapes fit into a larger shape, are some shapes always in a line without interruption, are the same shapes always the same distance from one another?
• Look for 2 boxes with something in common- is there anything else in common? E.g number of sides of a shapes, number of angles, category of angle e.g acute, right angle, obtuse or reflex
• You should know the number of sides of a shape of the top of your head so you don’t waste time counting in the exam.
o Shape & no. Of sides
o Square = 4
o Parallelogram = 4
o right angle triangle = 3
o Block arrow = 7
o Block cross = 12
o 4 pointed block star = 8
o 5 pointed block star = 10
