Do I Have A Chance?
Hi Everyone,
Just joined the forums. I have a few questions.... I am 30 yrs old man, four years qualified as a RN, have experience in plastic surgery, maxillofacial and currenctly a few years in intensive care. Have volunteered abroad a fair bit and recently completed hospital based post grad studies in intensive care nursing.
My Scottish standard grades were not the best due to many reason at high school such as ill-health. I got Maths-4, Science-3, English-3. Also some unrelated highers and CSYS. My degree in nusing was a bachelor of nursing with distinction from memory my CGPA is about 86%. Maths is my downfall, it just does'nt click with me. However am able to get 100% in my nursing calc tests with a bit revision every year. I know in every day medicine/nursing maths isnt that complicated as I do it every day and sometimes have to correct the intensive care doctors :-) However am really worried that I will struggle a lot on access course when it comes to maths.
Anyway I am applying for Stow, Cowa and possibly Sussex if I can get the time off work for 2010 start How many course do people here generally apply for?
I wonder what are peoples oppinion, do you think I have a chance of getting in?
Regards

hey mate, in my honest opinion i think you will have a great chance at both COWA and Sussex downes! I spoke to sussex downes and they said they would not accept me as i am only 19 and have only a years experience as im a first year student nurse and they prefer to take on candidates who are several years into a carreer such as yourself, plus i think they have a pretty high succes rate if u finish the course, i read somwere it may be like 95%! ive applied for Lambeth,islington and COWA ( got interview dates from all 3)and am hoping to get into COWA as a first choice mostly because it has some ties with UEA and it has like an 80% succes rate, but i personally think i am already in as the forums on here state that geting the interview is the harrdest part! and if i managed it with only a years student nurse experience then i cant see why you couldnt! but i would get applying as soon as possible so you cna start sorting out finances and checking out your med schools and accomodation! good luck anyhows and im fairly certain you willget into either Sussex Downes or COWA with out too much hastle!

Hi Klowe171,
Thanks for the reply and encouragement. I have already sent my application into COWA and STOW yesterday and already got an email from COWA asking for confirmation of all my qualifications, which sound ominous as they were given during the online application.
Anyone know what the content of the exam is at the pre selection course is at Sussex Down?

Hi Renascer,
Looking at your experience, you're essentially a dream mature student for most access courses.
As a former access student myself, may I suggest you look into the Perth pathway to medicine course. I started 2 years ago at 27 and I'm now at St Andrews Med School.
If you need any info on the course then PM me.
All the best,

Hey All,
I just got an email from student services from COWA. They are quering my qualifications. Quote:
"Thank you for the information. Looking at your grades and having compared them to GCSEs, it would appear that your qualifications do not meet the standards required to get onto the course. Your grade in Maths appears to be lower then the rest of the subjects you have attained and Chemistry is the only science-based exam that you have undertaken.
Please advise if you have taken English Language as an exam and if so, what grade you have achieved."
Am I not correct that Scottish standard grades are equivilent to GCSE's? I dont think they are looking at my application correctly. It clearly states I have maths, English and chemistry and I thought you only needed once science? I even provided a word document, detailing all my qualifications at their request. Also I also though standard grade English was an English exam, unless I was tripping in it! I also have a bachelor nursing degree with distinction.
My main Standard grades are as follow
English=3
Chemistry=3
Maths=4
Bachelor of Nursing with Distinction CGPA 86%
Can anyone give me some direction? Am I eligible for the course? I dont want to give up on COWA, as I dont think the person dealing with my application is really paying much attention to it. Any suggestions?
Regards
Fejao

should be able to get a train from Edinburgh straight to Peterborough, then change over for a half an hour train to Kings Lynn train station. Probably best just getting a taxi from there for a few quid, to make sure you get there nice and punctual.
