I've just received a letter, from Lambeth College, inviting me for interview (for their Access to Medicine course) and to sit two assessments, one in Communication and one in Maths.
The 'lovely' Post Office decided to take three weeks to deliver the letter to me so now I have just a few days to prepare.
Has anyone been through the Lambeth process? I'm assuming that the Communication test is English comprehension, but what kind of Maths questions do they ask? Are we talking trigonometry, quadratic equations etc. or, just your basic maths?
What does the interview involve?
Do people wear suits?
So many questions ... so little time... any advice will be gratefully received.
Sorry to hear you have so little time to prepare, I wish you the best of luck. I have no idea about the interview or the tests at Lambeth, however, I would advice to wear a suit, or at least something smart if a suit is not for you.
Good luck

In response to Dippy's question ... I have heard, but am yet to confirm, that Southampton and Brighton and Sussex accept Lambeth College's Access.
Also, Bart's told me that they do not accept any access courses (lovely woman) and King's said no to access, apart from King's Lynn. They also said (lovely woman, again), that they would not consider any mature applicant who had taken A levels previously, unless they did the King's Lynn course and got distinction, or had a 2:1, or higher at degree level. So, if you took A levels 20 years ago, you have to do either of these, or they will consider you to be a re-sit A level candidate, even if you choose different subjects. As a re-sit candidate, automatically, you will not be considered.
St George's, no-one answered the phone, but if anyone knows their stance, I'd be happy to hear it. Am checking other London colleges, too.
At the moment, it's not looking good for Lambeth, acceptance wise, however, I will ask them if they know of any Universities that accept their course as an entrance requirement.
In the meantime, I think I'll look into taking A levels, as I think I'll have more choice.
I managed to get a place at Lambeth college on the Access course to medicine so you may be in the same class with me. If you don't mind me asking, what medical schools will you be applying to?
Hi! Yes we will be in the same class as I just accepted a place, too. I think that I may have to take extra classes though, as so far, I only have one university, that I want, that accepts the Lambeth course. The tutor chappie told me that I'm probably too old, but I told him that I don't think I am and so he let me on because of my grades and experience. I'm interested in Brighton and Sussex, Bart's, King's, St George's and I think I might have to investigate a couple of others.
Brighton, or Bart's would suit me fine! I live in London, so Bart's would mean less upheaval, but I would quite like to leave the big ol' smoke and so Brighton would be cool. (Although, obviously, these are not the only reasons why I like them, but quality of life is an added bonus!) To be honest, I think I might have to do A levels as well, but I'm prepared to do that. Am going to see what the course work load is like and if I can I'll do them at the same time. I think from what the guy was saying though, that it might be a really heavy work load anyway and so, like I said to him, if at the end of the year, after clearing, I don't have a place, I'll just contact my Uni of choice and say, just tell me the 3 A levels you want and I'll do them!
As a matter of interest, what is your background? You can pm me with that, if you want.
I have to dash now, as yesterday, I noticed that a local Uni is holding holiday Summer Uni classes and so i thought I'd kill two birds with one stone. i.e. Get myself known and learn some stuff like Maths, Spanish etc. So must dash!
Hi there guys!!!I found this site really useful and i have been reading of the difficulties we go through to get on a bloody access course to medicine. I'm a registered nurse, i've done a 3years course in nursing and i have contacted many universities regarding entry qualifications and all of them said my qualifications are not enough for the course (although it is a health related diploma!!), I've been working as a renal nurse (on a medical ward) for over one and half years now. Anyway i have applied for Lambeth College recently as admission office says there's still vaccancies for the course. So one of you have been asked to take a communication and math test,, what does it involve?? Is it a difficult maths test?? What sort of questions they ask you in the interview. I doubt they will take me on the course cos i have applied way too late for a course which is in demand but just in case they do ask me for an interview so i would like to know what sort of questions they will ask me and what the test involve. Thanks
Don't worry about the Lambeth test it is very easy!!!. Maths is very basic and the english is simply an essay. At the interview just stress your dedication towards the course and explain the experience that you have. If you want more detailed info send me a private message,
Hi there!!
I have been checking on Portsmouth website and apparently they havent got a Medicine course!! I rang (and loads of you as well) lambeth college's admissions and someone told me that portsmouth university accept lambeth's access course to medicine but that cant be possible if they havent got a Medicine course, isn't it?? Here is portsmouth website http://www.port.ac.uk
I wounder which university might accept this course now?
I havent even been offered a place and i'm already worried!!LOL
Thanks, LUkas
The tests are really easy, so don't worry. The interview, well to be honest, my interview questions won't be at all relevant to you, but, basically, the guy said that I was far too old and was I mad?! He said that they only invited me in because of my grades and that they were going to say no to me because of my age. I told him he was mad and then I got in! Obviously it was a bit longer than that, but I'm just trying to illustrate the fact that I don't think my interview questions will be relevant to you.
The paper was not really what we were expecting anyway, in terms of following a syllabus - more to do with luck. I guess if you get your head down and get some questions you're familiar with then you...
Given that you didn't do any prep and you've come out with a score 11-12 points below what you require I don't think it's a losing battle at all. If you didn't revise then you won't hit the right...
