GCSE Results (2009) - Cardiff University?
Hello, i recieved my GCSE results a few days ago and i was slightly dissapointed... I want to apply to read in medicine or pharmacy maybe in Cardiff University but I realize that there is a lot of competition.
I am thinking of taking Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Physics upto to A2...
My GCSE Results (2009) are as follows:-
Information Technology - A*
Geography - A*
D@T : Systems and Control - A*
Food and Nutrition - A
Mathematics - A
Religous Studies - A
Science (Core) - A
Additional Science - A
Welsh Second Language (Short Course) - B
English Language - B
English Literature - C
Providing I do well in my A-Level's and in the UKCAT examination, would i have a good chance of getting into the courses or would i struggle a lot (and by that i mean - that i would need luck to get in?)...
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

Erm..... yeah
I have a feeling you already know that your grades are good enough and find it odd you are asking. However they do all ask for a minimum of B in maths and english so look into your English lit result.
About medicine. if you want it then go for it, but i advise you to gain some work exp first so you know that is is definetly for you.
Cardiff is an excellent medical school with a fantastic working relationship with its students. As a student i can confirm they judge on merit not ability. If you want medicine, if you want cardiff, its within your grasp. Go get it.
Again tho, and please dont think I am being patronising, but i am assuming that you are 16 having just got your GCSE's. Make sure that you want medicine, may i reccomend a great book called 'Trust Me, i'm a Junior Doctor' by Max Pemberton. If at the end of it u still want it, go get it !

Amusing
I've jus found out my GCSES won't actually meet there little point system they have conjured. With the whole 3 for A* 2 for A bollocks in which place you need 20. Luckily our friend who started this beautiful thread has achieved this, but I'm afraid one of my choices has just been crossed off. I now hope to find out other stipulations at other universities that I'm applying to.

Yeah, but you had a different kind of entry with your access to medicine and you being a mature student which sort of makes it different when entering. It appears to be how cardiff separate between us school leavers

Yeah its 21 points to be considered (well it was last year, might increase this year because of grade inflation). Out of your top 9 GCSE's which MUST include English, science and maths.
The problem is, your marked on GCSE's and non academic achievments and given a score for each. The highest overall scores are invited for interview. After interview your interview score is added to the other 2 scores and the overall highest scorers get offers.
This means if your just on the boundary (21/22 points) your disadvantaged all the way through as in theory you could be 5/6 points behind other people.
This is what they said at the open day anyway.Second Year Medical Student at Guys, Kings and St. Thomas Hospital
