chances of getting in
hi!i'm new on this forum
i was going through this forum and was wondering if my stuff is good enough for med entry 08, in year 12 right now, and currently doing as's
my gcse's aren't super amazing [didn't get any stars], but they're all a's
so far as's are going good *fingers crossed*, i have suitable work experience, eg. shadowing doctors, some pharmacy wor, charity work, prefect etc.
but i'm jus worried about the fact that i didn't get a string of a*'s in gcse's, and am wondering how much they will hinder my chances of interview/entry (permitting, my as's/a lvels/bmat goes well)?
thanx in advance
xx

Medical schools vary on their GCSE requirements some want a minimum of Bs in the Sciences, Maths and English others will want the minmum C grades in the major subjects. Generally theres more emphasis placed on your A levels and your GCSEs help slightly. Also you have A grades which is way more than enough for most medical schools. The thing is you may have the grades but you have to interview well aswell. I know you may have heard it before but when i was at college doing A levels there were people with 6-7 As and A*s at GCSE and also As at AS Level but they didnt get in either due to a bad personal statement or their interview went badly. And then there were those who struggled and got Bs and Cs at GCSE but got As at A level and got into medicine. GCSE wise you have nothing to worry about but make sure you have a strong personal statement and decent AS Grades if you have anything less than C grades at AS i very much doubt you will get offers for med. Best of luck. If i can help in any other way let me know.

thanx so much DR JC...lol confidence boost

I was thinking of mainly applying to London unis...King's,UCL, [Imperial..eek], St.George's....and I know these unis get some serious competitors from all over the country/world...are my chances slim?

Not really you have a good chance as anyone to get into the above. Only uni i would maybe think twice about before applying to is Imperial and the reason for that is they are as tough to get into as Oxbridge. But if you like a challenge then you should apply. Other then that Kings, UCL and St Georges are good choices. Dont forget though you need to do BMAT and UKCAT because the above unis all have different requirements. As long as you want it enough you will get in. Once again Best of Luck and any more questions feel free to ask. I'm sure there will be someone who disagrees with what i said about Imperial.

I'm not sure Imperial is harder to get into than the other medical schools you are considering as I found my Imperial interview a lot less demanding than my UCL interview - just my thoughts.
You should be fine with your GCSE grades - UCL have published criteria as to what they are looking for http://www.ucl.ac.uk/medicalschool/p...tion/index.htm and as you can see, if you get the required score on the BMAT and fulfill the other criteria you are guaranteed an interview.
Good luck

Imperial is only harder for access students, as they don't accept access to my knowledge. There is very little information on it, but I think they mainly focus on A level students.
If I remember correctly DR JC is on my course, and this may be where his information comes from. The stars exist that we might knowhow high our dreams can soar

The exams start tomorrow.
I was rejected for medicine, accepted, then changed my mind and rejected informatics, and decided to do a chemistry degree instead.
So I am off to queen mary's now... grades permitting. The stars exist that we might knowhow high our dreams can soar

I'm sure that you'll do ok applying for medicine. i can only speak for Georges ( as thats where i am) i got 2 A* a B and 5 A at gcse but only ABBC at AS and i got an offer from Georges, also your work experiences sounds pretty good i only had a week at a convalescent hospital plus a load of voluntary workfor children with special needs. Just write a good personal statement and you'll have as much chance as every other person applying to med school
Year Two-SGUl
Cos' Georges is the finest in the land Cor' Blimey !!!
