HELP!! I'm STUCK about universities!!
I can't decide my fourth option to study medicine:
St George's OR Southampton
As a londoner i want to stay in london & go to St George's.
BUT Southampton don't interview
No interview means more competition at Southampton but my teacher says that i need a back-up university. Also i don't think i'm really good at interviews!
If i was given the choice between the 2 i wud go wid St George's. But I rather get into at least 1 medical school.
HELP!!

hi mate have you been to their open days, if you had which one did you like the most, plus decide the location, if St-George is close, it wouldnt mind that personally. i have been there, its a nice place to be in. Well about the interview, i would recommend you to find out information regarding the universities you are going to apply before interviews as they will definitely as you questions about the university itself. so make sure you know. moreover there are some who are PBL (Problem Based Learning) and some are traditional, so make sure you know the difference. keep up to date with current medical issues especially on drugs that are in the news.
i hope this helps.Cambridge University- Conditional Offer (Firm)
Manchester University- Conditional Offer
Imperial College- Conditional Offer (Insurance)
UCL- Conditional Offer
Cant Wait to start at Cambridge Medical School!!!!!

Anita you have already posted this in the Southampton and St Georges forums. Southampton is not a backup university, quite the opposite and you have stated you would prefer to remain in London ans St Georges is in London... so I dont quite see the difficulty of the situation. There are many hurdles in Medicine its not just about applying and getting a place. That is only one of many.

lol I think there only a couple of places that dont interview not enough for an entire med application!
What are you so scared of at interviews? its only communication with other human beings. They will understand if you mess up a bit cos it can be nerve racking.Surprise yourself by being a little brave and doing so! Either way you will have to accept interviews are kinda way of the world, whats going to happen when you want to apply for jobs etc?

As far as medicine is concerned I can not honestly think of any university being a "back up" choice as I believe each medical school has its own unique attributes that suite the right candidates for it.
Five years is a significant time and as such I feel the choices you make now should be about what you really want out of the unis of your choice including the social aspect of the place.
As has already been mentioned open days are really great deciders for most people -as well as staying true to what you honestly want.
Interviews without a doubt can be terrifying even for the most seasoned candidates -but again I think practice and a look at some of the past questions on the Interview threads may help...and yes being a doctor is also about communication and hence the reason most unis prefer to interview!!

can anyone of you tell me as to exactly when is the interview for medical students? which month is it? especially for universities that have interviews in the uk.. and does these interviews conducted by the universities actually clash with those examination boards that have their exams in January? please reply as soon as possible.. anyone.. thanks

Exams take place between November (St Andrews conducts theirs early...) and March (I had my Aberdeen interview on the 21st, the last day they were conducting interviews)
So yes, all medical schools would be sometime between then.
Really wide scope.

I can't quite believe you/your teacher see Southampton medical school as a 'back-up'. There's no such thing as a back-up medical school matey. I think ultimately your decision depends on whether you think you'll come across as a stronger candidate on paper or at interview. But be aware that you’ll probably have to have a faultless academic record and personal statement to be accepted by Southampton. At least at St. Georges, with an interview, you have much more control over your application. Don’t forget to go to the open days as well to see which of the two you like most.

St Georges is a really lovely place, but they rejected me. So I recommend Southampton. Lol.
