Access to Medicine?
Hey people,
As an A-level student taking Biology, Chem and Eng Lit, who has a good amount of work xp, but who might fall just short of the grades this year, are there any Acess to Medicine courses that would suit me?"Radical means grasping things at the root!"

Access courses are for people without a scientific academic background; it sounds more like you would need to do resits.

Nope Actually
Your doing the exact same subjects that i am doing and i have applied for two access courses and 3 biomed. My predicted grades are only ABC so i had to apply for access. I have applied to Kings Coleeg and University of Southampton both for six year courses then to portsmouth, Kings again and UCL for Biomedical science

They are not Access courses, they are premed courses. An access course is completly different to a pre-med course, for example like they offer at Southampton BM6 etc etc
Of course i may be wrong, but seeing as im on an Access course at the moment i have a pretty good idea........ and access courses are designed for people with a Non-science background or a background in health care (eg nurses - like me), and they are designed for mature students to start from scratch the science subjects and take them up to A level standard in a year.Last edited by AmandaPollitt; 24-01-2006 at 02:27 AM.

Premed courses are the same, but with automatic progression to the regular course at the end. It does sound like Sarah is applying to premed, but since the academic entry requirements tend to be the same as for a regular 5-year course (albeit in non-science subjects), I'm a little surprised she's applying to them. For instance, KCL entry requirements:

Hey
Okay Hi i dont know if my understanding of access is the same as u guys. I do not have the Predicted grades to apply to the traditional 5 year course. I am 17 and i am going to Uni str8 from A-Levels okay. So Out of my 6 course i have applied to TWO Access course they are at KCL and Southampton. They are both 6 year courses asking for grades CCC. So that is why i am recommeding them. The other degrees that i listed are pre med.

Hiya i just checked your link and realised that you are talking about a foundation year course which isnt the same i am talking about an access course for A level students without the right grades. But there is some criteria you must meet i e you need to either receive EMA, live in a certain area, Your parents must have a certain income or you must live in rented housing .

Doesn't sound like a traditional Access course per se (see Amanda's post) - these courses are attached to the universities? Have you got any links, I've not heard of such things before, sounds interesting.

Just thought id add to my previous post that to do a traditional access course (like Kings Lynn) you actualy only need to have GCSE's...............which is pretty cool.
