Are you at MANCAT yourself Mr faisal?
I would be interested in knowing this answer to this too. I want to go next year and am currently contacting med schools to see who accepts it.
So far - I know that Hull York does and Leeds doesn't.
Does anyone know who else accepts the Mancat course?
shahghazi - as far as I know you have to be 19.

i find it hard to believe that leeds do not accept the mancat course since they are positioned 34th out of the top 100 universities and there are many more ie manchester ranked 16th who accept the mancat course so ive e-mailed them just to double confirm it for you

don't get ur hopes up!!
I did the access to med course at mancat last year. I got 2 interviews out of 4 and i passed the course with distinction 87% and I was gutted when I never got a place. The fact that I am a nurse should've helped but it didn't.
Maybe since the tuition fees are going up next year, there was a lot of competition for places. It just pisses me off when i worked so hard to get a distinction and people that copied and cheated to pass were the ones that got the places. They didn't deserve to get in like many of us should have.
I am currently studying traditional chinese medicine and acupuncture at salford uni and I can say that it is extremely interesting and extremely difficult. It's sort of on the same ranking as medicine as a degree as we study anatomy and physiology and applied biomedical sciences into great detail. Just the same depth as orthodox med students do. On top of this we study the theory of how the chinese look at the body and health and how things go wrong. Very very complicated indeed. Far more confusing than western med. It contradicts western med in many ways but it makes sense at the same time. It's difficult to explain but it's a totally different and interesting way of looking at health. I've only been on the course since Sept but from what i've seen on my clinical placements acupuncture can cure and treat many diseases that western med can't or takes time to and the best part is the patient has minimal or nil side effects from treatment.
For example, one patient had appendicitis and if she went to a hospital she would've got it taken out, but acupuncture solved the problem with no surgery. Sounds bizarre but believe me it's true. It's an amazing treatment that needs more clinical trials, research and definitely more recognition as a profession. You have to see it to believe it.
If you are not successful in getting a place in medicine I would recommend lokking into studying tcm and acupuncture as an alternative. I guarantee you'll love it. It's a 3 year Bsc(HONS) degree. and in 5-7 years, the time it takes you to do med and prho it should be availabe in the nhs (it's in the pipe line) so job security is there. ANd for those of you that just want to go into medicine for the money, tcm and acupuncture will make you richer faster. once you've finished the degree it's estimated that people that go into private practice earn hundreds of thousands in about 2-5 years. it'll take you a good 10-15 in western med.

thats odd i know a hand full of people who got in without any problems, perhaps there was something missing in your p.s or you didnt try hard enough at the interview. As i know that they dont only care on how well you did but in medicine your PS holds almost as much value

oh and in the reply in regards to the money making scheme, its true they do get paid more quicker however if your a private GP there are basically no limits, there was an article in the times of gp's earning 1million pounds every year

hey there! IM on the access to med course in Kings Lynn at the moment, (the most recognised and highly thought of out of ALL the access courses). Anyway im also a nurse and i was just reading your post about Acupuncture. I have just this minute got in from an interview at the university of Westminster in london for their TCM and acupuncture course, and i must say it sounds facinating. I have applied to medical schools too but im not holding much hope of getting a place as the competition is so so so high. Anyway i was just wondering........ do you see acupuncture as a good alternative than going into medicine? I know the anatomy, physiology and differential diagnosis and pathology is to the same level as medical students, and you actually get to diagnose and treat your own patients, are you finding it fullfilling being on the course?

hey Amanda
I definitely find the course fulfilling. It's exceeded my expectations! I think it's a great alternative to orthodox med. It's becoming more and more popular as every day goes by. There was a news coverage on acupuncture couple of months ago and Prince Charles was backing it 100% and he is determined that he is going to help make it available on the nhs.
If you're not successful in med I'd definitely recommend tcm, especially at westminster as it is the best course going in the uk. It's the only one that runs for 5 years and covers every aspect of chinese medicine. Unfortunately the course I'm on doesn't cover the herbal side. It's a very demanding course, lust like conventional medicine. You will need an open mind as what you learn in tcm will contradict your western knowledge of physiology. Especially being a nurse. For example, as far as you're concerned the bone marrow produces red blood cells, brought on by erythropoetin from the kidneys etc. In chinese med the spleen produces blood. It is made from the combination of pure air (Qi) and the Qi from our food. Very difficult to explain, but believe me what you learn will make sense when you apply the theory to clinical practice.
When I was in the clinic the other day, the patient's lung collapsed. The doctor got a very large acupuncture needle and put it in between the clavicle and scapula and moved it in and out repeatedly. Within about a minute the patient's lung re inflated. Thing i'm talking crap? I would prob think so too. It's only when you start to see it's results when you start to believe in it.
Another patient was extremely scared of needles and although they are really fine she panicked. Her blood pressure went really high, she had palpitations and she was really breathless. The doc used acupressure on a point on her herm and within a minute her blood pressure was normal, breathing normal and palps gone. Amazing just amazing!!
Another patient had 3 shots at ivf, with no success. Had acupuncture, went on holiday and came back pregnant.
I could go on and on forever! Honestly, ask around private clinics if they would let you observe what they do for a day and speak to their patients. I promise you will be hooked and will never look back.
xx
