Advice For Those Interested In King's Kynn Access Course

    hello guys..
the Access to Medicine course at King's Lynn is widely accepted by many med schools including UEA (you get a guaranteed interview), Sheffield, Manchester, HYMS, St Georges, Leeds (& many more)...
You CAN get a place in med school if u have a 2.2 but u have to be so careful where you apply - UEA are linked to the course so u will get an interview there anyway, Leicester is also a good bet - many people with 2.2s have got a place there (including 2.2s in science!!).. Aberdeen interviewed everyone who applied from the course this year... dont bother applying to newcastle/durham or hyms if you have a 2.2 - they are not accepting ANY 2.2s from 2006 entry...
    GOOD LUCK to all :-)

It is a full year course that you can attend if you don't have the qualifications to get directly into Medical School, or if you have worked for a few years and need to have a refreshed scientific knowledge.
The programme tends to be a bit similar to A-levels, however it is more specific to Medicine, and the course is much more intense. The good point is that it gives you good chances to be admitted in medical school, providing you succeed that year.

Here is what I pasted from the Sussex Downs college website:
Access to Medicine is an intensive science-based one year full time course tailored to the requirements of a medical degree, designed to provide an alternative route for non traditional students into medical training
    Who is it for?
It is a course for mature students who, having achieved in other areas, now wish to retrain as doctors. These include
    · people with experience in other health related professions
    · people whose initial career choice has proved unsatisfying and who wish to change their field of employment to the health care sector
    · people who only decided to study medicine after they had committed themselves to further and/or higher education studies that did not constitute a suitable preparation for medical training

    Hi,
As a ex-KL its good to see so many still there. Just a little on the applications front, don't assume all is the same as the safe bet Uni's are not always so safe. The whole part of getting an interview is what they see in your background, A person who studied at KL with me, got six distinctions and is still unable to get a place at medical school, they also had a very good academic background. Alot of the medi cal schools are now bumping up the requirements from the access courses as there is a little concern amongst the admissions fraternity.
    Good luck all anyway!

It'd be just my luck for success rates on Access courses to plummet now that I've been accepted at King's Lynn...

But seriously; everyone going onto the Access course knows that getting into medical school is not a sure thing - there are no sure things in something so competitive. For how long has your friend with the six Distinctions been trying to get in? As a friend of his, what would you say his likely shortcomings are? Does he get very nervous at interview? Does he not have sufficient work experience? Is there something in his past that makes him look unreliable?

I don't know the guy at all, but there must be something more to it than misfortune. If his prior academic profile is good and he has six Distinctions on Access to Medicine, he can't do much better on the academic front.

I agree wiyh DH2005, and probably that guy aimed too high applying to universities that are very very competitive ( Oxbridge, Manchester, etc).
