Chances for Aberdeen?
Hi there, I'm currently taking my AS levels in sixth-form and was wondering what my chances would be for Aberdeen.
GCSEs
3 A*s (Additional science, BTEC engineering)
3 As (Science, Expressive Arts, Maths)
4 Bs (Additional Maths, English Language, English Literature and History)
1 C (Spanish)
Let's say for arguments sake that i have AAAa for A level, because that is what I'm aiming for. Plus, i have all the extra-curricular things needed. Plus, i have a UKCAT of 680+. (I know this seems a little far away)
But, would anyone tell me whether i'd be able to get an interview/place and if not, what am i missing?

You're missing a personal statement. Probably the most important part of your application
Seriously people should stop fretting about grades. You can be a genius but if you write a rubbish PS with no experience or understanding of what medicine is about you won't get an interview. Simple as
Oh and if you're doing AS levels.. why are you asking? You are a year away from applying... And you wasted your time doing UKCAT.. you have to do it in the year you appliyLast edited by Keeno; 05-10-2009 at 02:16 AM.

Odds? Probably 50/50.
But seriously I've no idea. Do Aberdeen rely heavily on GCSEs?Glasgow Medic, 2010-2015

i think keiron is trying to say that he expects to get a ukcat score of 680 when he sits it next year, is that right? really hope you haven't sat it this year by mistake! keiron a ukcat of 680 is quite an achievement, and imo if you haven't sat the test before its difficult to predict how you will do with any real accuracy. also bear in mind that aberdeen only place a small emphasis on ukcat scores (makes up 4% of the application). im applying to aberdeen an as far as i know they aren't especially "gcse-heavy", unlike somewhere such as brum.

imo aberdeen don't state explicitly what they value most from an application.
quote from the website: "UCAS applications that offer suitable academic standards of qualifications are processed in four stages. Firstly, an academic score is given for attained or predicted qualifications. Secondly, the UCAS personal statement and reference are carefully evaluated and objectively scored. The third score is then given for attainment in the UK CAT. A summary of these scores determines which candidates are then selected for interview."
not exactly sure what is meant by 'carefully evaluated', but for me it suggests they take your ps/reference pretty seriously. Then again this is surely true of all med schools. Also, they mention that medically-related work experience is 'not essential', but they expect from you a good knowledge of what being a doctor is like.
however im glad they determine interviews based on the sum of all parts, i think its the best way to do it. with this in mind i think a good all round application will fair best (as vague and obvious as that statement is!).
