Ok I don't know the exact details of how applications are marked, but from what I understand, if you meet the minimal entrance requirements AND the experience requirements (volunteering / hospital work / care work / shadowing / team work of some kind)

    1) Personal statement is the part of the application u want to focus on, it most often is the first thing that distinguishes you from thousands of other applicants - PS review is the end of the line for many applications

    2) I don't think reference makes much difference, as long as it's written by someone who had a chance to watch you work in a team, undertake school projects, etc. - if it's full of praises and gives some insight into why u will make a good doctor, it shouldn't matter whether u got it from Head of School, a doctor you were shadowing for 2 months, or your biology teacher.

    3) As Keeno mentioned above, your ukcat is impressive but unfortunately you'll need to re-take it next year, just prior to applying. Don't feel pressured into performing at genius level, tho - UKCAT is almost never the final reason why applicants are accepted/rejected.

If your application meets the requirements and your PS got some extra points from the markers, u'll get an interview invite. This is *actually* where most of the points come from, i.e. it's the 'to be or not to be' for an applicant. Even if your ucas form is sparkling with perfection, u won't get in after a disappointing interview. Not that I want to scare u or anything

Meh it pisses me off when I see loads of people asking the same question. They should just put in BIG letters at the top of the forum

if you have the minimum grades you are at no disadvantage unless the applications are so tight they have to choose between little things to decide between applications.... but a reasonable UKCAT and a good PS are probably worth more in terms of importance. IE A GOOD ALL ROUND APPLICATION IS BEST plus write a kick ass PS saying how you will discover the cure for cancer cos you are so awesome

So if you have better grades than the mimimum requirements... why are you fretting?

In my opinion, get an average UKCAT, get some work experience, get the grades and have a BANGING personal statement.

If you hit the PS out the park, you're in with a good shout for an interview.
