    If you are buying books you may wish to see what you can find second hand. I've listed the new retailers as well. Please add to list if you know anywhere else.

Also stock pocket tools (eg normal values rables) stethoscopes, lab coats, tourniques, budget throat illuminators etc) They had a wider range of books and diagnostic equipment when they were on the medical campus - wider range of scopes, otoscopes and opthalmoscopes.

    Waterstones 2 branches in Union Street. a few shelves with recommended texts,flash cards, posters, no diagnostic eqpt.

    Second Hand
    The Hub, Elphinstone Road, Old Aberdeen (Run voluntarily by the Students Charities campaign. (Good choice of medical books).

    ????, Spital, Sunnybank, Aberdeen. (Couple of shelves of medical books)

    On the subject of new books - don't forget about amazon (yes, I know I repeat myself here, but it usually IS cheaper than waterstones/blackwell )

    BTW, Aitch - Doms doesn't need my labcoat after all so if u (or anybody else) are interested, it's a 'regular' sized one. It's a freebie, so I'll do it on first come first served basis

    Is it just lab coats students have to supply themselves or are there also safety specs, safety goggles, disposable gloves for use in labs?

    @anatomist
    so where do I get a labcoat from?
    if you are regular size, then u can get it from me. Otherwise, I think they will be available at the Hub at some point (used ones - £5 or £10, Im afraid). There's no reason to buy a brand new one, since it'll get covered in formaldehyde anyways

    @Frank E
    Students need to have their own lab coats, own box'o'gloves, and own steths. I wouldn't worry about safety specs/goggles - u won't be in contact with any particularly irritant/explosive/infectious materials during year 1.

    u nick 'em off hospital wards just kidding, of course - the anatomy department will sell 'em to your class just before you start DR sessions. Luckily, they're not expensive and will last your two years if not more.

    PS - the coat is yours. I could meet u before/after any of the freshers events next week, I stay just minutes away and come to matthew hay bld for the internets anyway. PM me ur mobile no in case we have trouble finding each other in the crowd :]

    Some of the following Wholesalers and Retailers stock personal protective equipment. I have I included suppliers of eye and hand protection in case you have to get them too.

    Disclaimer: If you are not supplied gloves and safety glasses/goggles and have to buy them, make sure they are CE marked and to the appropriate level of protection specified by the Tutors and/or Occupational Health at the medical school for general lab use, or specific task use e.g working with or exposed to phenols, formaldehyde etc. Material safety data sheets should be consulted and PPE precautions observed for any substance you are handling. I couldn't find the medical school's H&S manual only the IMS's and Estates' ones.
    (main applicable standards appended)

    Labcoats can be found at:

    Retail
    Alexandra, Union Street, Aberdeen City Centre.

    McKays of Queen Street, Queen St, Aberdeen Cty Centre (round corner from Marischal College)

    Robert Gordon University Shop, Schoolhill

    Wholesale
    Aberdeen has many PPE suppliers. Arco, Greenham, RS, Wenaas have shops or trade counters with a wide range of safety specs and goggles, latex, vinyl or nitrile powdered or non powdered dispo glove range. Also emollients, barrier creams and hand care if your gloves give you gip. You don't need to be 'trade' or have an account and their trade counters are the same prices as their websites.

    The school should have gloves, you can purchase at a very fair price.

    If however you want to get your own or in the highly unlikely event they don't have powder-free or latex free and, say, you have an allergy then some of the more affordable dispo gloves are:

    Arco Website - 100 Finity Powder Free Latex Free Disposable Gloves from BM Polyco - Product 1455300 .........£6.38/100

    Arco Website - 100 Finity PF30 Latex Free Disposable Gloves from BM Polyco - Product 1490600 ....£8.03/100

    Arco Website - 100 Class III Disp Nitrile P/F Blue from Skytec - Product 1450600 £9.94/100

    Nitrile are a little more expensive but they are less likely to 'pin-hole'.

    Arco Website - 100 Finite P Nitrile Disposable Gloves Indigo from BM Polyco - Product 1455400 ..........£10.34/100

    If white isn't your colour:
    Arco Website - 50 N-Dex Nighthawk Nitrile Glove from Best - Product 1455800 £7.25/50 i.e. £14.40/100

    (Arco site just used as comparison not a recommendation).

    I've been fine when I worked in harsh environments such as at a couple of the local electroplaters with cheap ones. Well, my hands were unscathed but my face took a bit of a battering from the chemicals.
