Your Help please!
Hi Guys,
I am a graduate starting at Aberdeen in Sept. My degree is in Psychology and I've not really done any biology or chemistry since school - which was 5 years ago. Yikes!
Because of this I'm a bit worried about the volume of information I've forgotten and don't want to fall behind with the work load.
I'm just about to hit the books so that I'm up to speed with everyone else, but could really do with some suggestions of topics to cover from some of you who have studied Bio and Chem more recently.
I did Advanced Highers in both but seemed to have lost my notes (AKA burned them post exam). I'm going to be trying to scadge notes of my wee sister's palls so it would be great if I could tell them exactly what I need.
Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Katie.

Hi Katie,
Not everyone may agree with me, but IMO getting up to speed with school leavers in bio+chem is pointless... U'll only need the basics, and I really mean basics. Prof Long's and Prof Cotter's lectures will take you through *everything* you'll need, starting with the fundamentals of life, structure and content of a typical cell, types of tissue, types of chemical reactions in living organisms, overview of lipids, proteins, carbs... In fact, many school leavers in my class complained because the first lectures were so boring and basic... ppl were falling asleep constantly and some even missed the lectures on purpose, when they concluded they're not learning anything new.
If I were u, I'd try to have a good grasp of fundamentals in chemistry and biology (so that u're not puzzled e.g. when they mention an endothermic reaction), but don't even bother with stuff like organic chemistry - it's going to be mentioned in lectures if somebody should ever expect u to know it.
Enjoy your summer and good luck in October

I agree with Kensei here. I was an A level school leaver and found that we covered most of Basic Science at A level. Although I was lucky to have mammalian physiology and behaviour as our option in Biology

Yup unless they have cnanged the course a lot, it's a waste of time. So you really don't need to!

I wouldn't worry. Everyone is in the same boat in learning the same volume of info, some of it is complete garbage

I forgot most of my advanced higher shizzle over summer, through consumption of alcohol and watching the jeremy kyle show.
Take it easy for now

my degree was in psychology too, but i had a firm science background too. like the others said i dont think its worth reading up on much. there will be other people in the same boat, ie we had people who'd done degrees in history and things.
maybe get the recommended biochemistry book and just read some chapters in that. anything else id say isnt really going to help u.2008: Aberdeen -int jan-UNCOND OFFER
