    Clubs/Soc

    Hey all, hows it going?

Just a couple of questions for the current years regarding clubs/soc. Im interested in some sports socs, but just wondering whether the timetable allows for tht, as usually sports take place during wednesday afternoons? Or do medical students kinda form...their own sports socs?

Also...im a total n00b in a sport that I do wanna take up...should that stop me? -talk about low confidence levels-

Furthermore, dyou actually have time for them?!

    Thanks muchos in advance!

The societies and sport clubs are numerous and definitely worth joining (especially if you take into account the fact that being a president or a secretary of one gives you extra points towards your FY application).

Being a beginner in sport shouldn't discourage you, this is how we all start. From past experience at Aberdeen Uni TaeKwon-Do I know every few weeks there are complete beginners giving a new sport a shot, and some of them decide to stay. At some clubs (e.g. TKD) you eventually reach a level when you're allowed to teach the basics to the newbies.

Sports and gym are a great way to channel the stress/negative karma which accumulates slowly in everyone.. and IMO every medic should have some kind of an exercise routine (after all, we're supposed to be the ones giving others an example of how one can stay fit and healthy).

During the first year there definitely is time for this (especially since usually 2 trainings x 2 hrs per week is enough for all practical purposes except for hardcore performance training/muscle mass gain). Many clubs hold their training in the evenings so even lectures which finish at 5pm wouldn't stop you from going. You need to check that with specific club representatives though.

Medics have their own football team and a rugby team - I haven't heard about any other medic-only teams.

    Hope this helps..

    Hi,

Definitely do not worry about being a beginner. Uni is really your chance to start anything and in most clubs there is a mixture of levels.
I joined the trampolining club this year, which is a lot harder work than it looks. There are 2 training sessions a week about 2 hours long and did not clash with my timetable at all and I had time to study as well.
Joining a sport club is really good socially as well. You will probably spend the majority of time with other medics so a society is a good way of meeting some non-medics and people in higher years.
I have not really heard much about medic teams except for the SNIMS competition (seemed to be a big Scotland/N. Ireland medic sports day).

    Hey...
That all does soundvery promising, thanks guys! I am very much wanting to get involved in hockey, last time I played was in high school, so years ago. I wonder whether we would need our own sticks for tht...hmmmm.

Hey Aitch, I think they only have the 'grass' version of hockey here.. I can't seem to recall any ice arenas in Abdn area except for the curling place near Woodend

Isn't there a ice rink down at the beach which was closed for a while. Is that open again?
Aitch the grass hockey team play on a Wednesday afternoon at the kings pavilion fields. i started the job at the uni on a Wednesday and saw them playing.

There'll be enough people in most sports clubs so new members can join on a just-for-fun or a competitive basis.

I did engineering, 30 odd hours were timetabled and I still had time to do sports. In fact I didn't have time not to do any sports.

There are new facilities on their way

Frank E - add Capoeira to this list; our club was classified as a dance (therefore not part of 'sport clubs' - it's under 'societies' now) by some ignorant tit just because it looks foreign ;-P it may not be as lethal as tkd, but it still is tiring as hell and can be used in defense - good traits for any martial art.

I was going to add that but couldn't remember the name. One of the guys on site was wearing an AU Capoeira hoody the other day.
