Is it like on scrubs/ doctor in the house etc where we get to follow a consultant in small groups who asks us horrible questions lol?
Also going to be really geeky and ask if there is anything good to do over the summer study wise. Is it a good idea to buy those books and read up on stuff before term starts. Already brought Gray's Anatomy back home as it is scary how much anatomy I have forgotten.
Sure I will get lots of 'chill its summer' replies but I will go mad with nothing to do over the next 3 months and no medics to talk to!
Haven't seen Scrubs or Doctor in The House but, yes the Consultants do quiz you in front of patients, not a real grilling though (buy that may depend on the Consultant ). For instance the Orthopaedic / Athroscopy Consultant quizzed the student on which nerve and possible parts and branches of that nerve might be causing a particular para/hypothesia. I was the patient and there was only one medical student, not sure what year he was in though.
Might be a good idea to review your 1st year stuff nearer the end of the holidays but otherwise chill it's summer.
I think a compact atlas might be useful for review purposes?

Nothing to do for 3 months? Not found a summer job, not looking?

No such thing exists However I'd recommend making your potential summer revision as much fun as possible - the 'compactness' is obviously desirable, therefore I would personally consider Netter's flash cards if I had 'em... since I *don't*, I'll have 2 stick with coloring book and Acland's

The main three ones are essential clinical anatomy, vander's human physiology and the community course book. Personally I really disliked the recommended anatomy book and had gray's anatomy for students instead, which makes more sense and has bigger clearer pictures. Managed to learn anatomy fine with this even though gray's does go into a bit too much detail.
The anatomy colouring book is really good. Very helpful if you are a more visual learner and associate things with colours.
Brilliant thanks, did you just wait until you got there and tried out a couple fo them before you bought them or rush straight in and get them haha? Take it you never bought all 12 books or something that are on the lists?
Aberdeen first year, it's bloody awesome up here.

keeno, havent been sent a book list for 2nd yr yet, that list looks immense!

Frank - I am looking for a job but not looking too hopeful at the moment so will probably end up with nothing to do over summer.
Keiran - It is best to wait. I got Vander's off amazon as it was about £5 cheaper and got the community course book from Blackwells. Total rip off as it is £25 and a thin book. Found a good histology book in the library that was useful.
Elz - Congrats on your job it sounds amazing. Always a good idea to know what the anatomy of something is before you go sticking in needles.

Ha! Will be over a week before I find out if I have passed or not. Not too hopeful at all. Community course exam was horrible and so was the written paper of principles of disease. My own fault though cos I really couldn't concentrate when revising so only actually started about 2 days before the exam.

Yeah when you are on wards you will be in groups of around 8. You will get practical teaching sessions where the consultants will teach you. Depends on the consultant but they usually go around asking you questions. If you are standing on the left hand side of the bed chances are you will be asked to examine or name conditions etc first so that's always a good idea cos you get the easy ones

I am getting a bit worried about jobs now! Need to phone up nursing bank and get signed up so I can start doing auxiliary nursing shifts. Done all my training etc so just waiting on getting P45 from last job. Hope I can basically get full time hours though. Will be bank staff so just relying on everyone going on holiday

Well good luck for when you do get your results. Seems community course does not get any better then
Wards sound fun, real patients yay! That should make up for it.

Best wishes for your exam results.

Groups of 8! Eek! Thank God I'd only 1 in my appointment.

LHS? lef of the patient or left of the foot of the bed?

BTW say someone needed a minor procedure. Just say the patint offered to have it done by students on practice or in Ogston could the patient get it done quicker?

What are 'Principles of Disease' and 'Community Course' exams/modules about?

    LHS of bed he said.
community course u have placements at a gp surgery once a week in first yr, and u do stuff on environment affecting health, politics of health, normality, affects of age on health etc. if u have a good gp they will bring in patients to illustrate these ie we had a patient who had worked on a ship most his life in boiler room and how this had affected health of people on the ship.
you also visit a new mum with baby in groups of 2 or 3.
the exam is stupid, basically scenario type questions where u hav to take a holistic approach. in 2nd yr i believe u look at disease and disability in sessions. and death and dying? and in 2nd yr u visit someone with some sort of health prob.

Just back to the clinical skills stuff we get to do at the start. What exactly do we get to try our mitts at in terms of examination? Is it sort of like the practical anatomy otutorials in 1st year? Thats the sort of impression I have of it, from an entirely theoretcal point of view.

Also everyone here seems to present a really negative view of the community course. I thought it was quite enjoyable, honestly. Some of it is a bit waffley but I enjoyed the stuff about health inequalities etc.

In ref. to elz I heard that we do 'breaking bad news' in 2nd year community course. can't remember my source for that!

    Ps. who are you? lol
