Graduate Applicants
Hi
I am starting Biomedical Sciences at Aberdeen this September. As things stand I plan to apply to medicine as a graduate. My question is: How will Aberdeen access a Graduate application to medicine? Will they base selection purely on getting a 2:1 in my first degree, or will they look back at my school career too? I failed all my classes this year and was fortunate to get into Biomedical based on my 5th year grades.
This is all very disheartening - the thought of being ruled out of medicine completely just because I bombed 6th year makes me feel like giving up alltogether.
Please any advice/insight appreciated

hi. im an oldie who did Bsc BMS and MSc BMS (not in aberdeen tho). jus coming up to finishin off my MSc but i applied yr b4 to aberdeen and was fortunate enuff to b offered a place.
my alevels wer scrape passes (my own fault-no self-belief and hated school i was at so missed alot of classes) and my gcses wer average but i worked hard for my first degree (got v high 2.1) and did plenty of work experiences. i proved to them i was hard working and determined (got in 2nd time).
so bottom line is u prob stil have a chance even tho it hasnt gone well for u in the past but ring admissions and ask. as ur already at the uni, find out contacts u need to impress and to increase ur chance of gettin in - acaedemics/drs/etc.
also try and get shadowin or ne kind of w.experience.
work hard and all the best

Hi anton,
I was in similar situation, i.e. graduate whose a-levels were not what the med school asked for. Apart from looking at the degree class and your work experience/attitude (as mysterious mentioned) they will make sure you meet the basic requirements that all applicants should meet, including chemistry, biology, etc. In my case, I had an additional condition of achieving a high pass in their summer school programme - however since you are going into BM sci, I doubt this will be an issue in your case. I recommend that you seek HCA experience and volunteer posts if you didn't have plenty of those before. It's all about commitment, as they say. All the best and I hope you'll enjoy your first degree at abdn
Robafter an extreme NMM makeover u might find me using another profile (Kensei)..

Transferring after 1st/2nd year biomed was banned after 2005/2006. You now must complete the entire BScBMS degree, but as far as I'm aware all of the BScBMS 4th year students this year that applied got offered entry to either 1st or 2nd year medicine at Aberdeen, so if you do your work, and show youre committed over the 3/4 years of BMS, then you should be fine!
Plus the BScBMS degree is really good + worthwhile to have on its own, especially from Aberdeen because its so broad and you get to study lots of different things! All that glitters........
Happy :-D

hey. I think ringing them is your best bet. I don't have much knowledge of the Scotish system so I know this won't probably help that much but when I rang them, they said that graduates just required a 2.1 degree and B in Chem A-Level, which may mean a B in your Advanced Highers? I think?

Hey guys. I was actually gonna start a thread for a similar question but I'll post here. I'm a graduate with a BSc and MSc hoping for 2009 entry but I've got v.poor A levels Chem(C) Maths (C) Bio (D; OUCH!).
So this issue with A level Chemistry, I see that they ask for a B unless its been covered to a certain level in previous degrees or you get a high pass in summer school. So i'm guessing admissions would judge on individual merit maybe depending on the strength of the rest of the application (PS, ref ect..). Does anyone know whether admitting grads with Alevel Chem less than a B is common?
Also do u know how they use the UKCAT scores...points system ect..?
Thanks
